City advisor, veteran, Eloenn's mother
Background: Soldier (Officer)
Skills: Athletics, Intimidation, Persuasion, Insight, Perception
Tools: Playing cards, vehicles (land)
Languages: Common, Elvish, Orc, Goblin
Darkvision: Ilsevel can see in dim light within 60 feet of her as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. She can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of grey.
Fey Ancestry: She has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put her to sleep.
Trance: Instead of sleeping, Ilsevel meditates deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day.
Military Rank: Ilsevel has a military rank from her career as a solider. Soldiers loyal to her former military organization still recognize her authority and influence, and they defer to her if they are of a lower rank. She can invoke her rank to exert influence over other soldiers and requisition simple equipment or horses for temporary use. She can also usually gain access to friendly military encampments and fortresses where her rank is recognized.
Ilsevel Durante is Eloenn’s mother. Though she has a very commanding presence and may seem intimidating from afar, most people find her engaging and pleasant to talk to. She is genuinely interested in others, and is known for following up on conversational tidbits other people may forget, such as the health of a close relative, or the success of a new business venture.
The Durante family has lived in Ashfell for the last two hundred years. In that time, Ilsevel has secured for herself a position of relative power in the local government. She is friend, confidant, and advisor to the governor, and cares greatly about the state and success of Ashfell.
Some may think it unusual to see a family of high elves living in Ashfell, and indeed it has not always been their home. Ilsevel and Fennaen traveled extensively before settling in Ashfell, spending time in a large variety of cities, and with nearly every race in existence. Ilsevel has many fascinating tales of her adventures, but speaks little about her life before she and Fennaen set off together.
You will always find Ilsevel immaculately dressed, indicative of her status as a noble of Ashfell. Those who have seen her, even in passing, are not likely to forget her striking features, the easy confidence with which she conducts herself, and her prosthetic left arm. The latter she does not try to conceal in any way; it is a masterwork of her husband’s creation, finely crafted and delicately tuned, and she treats it as a natural part of herself. Unsurprising, as it has been several centuries since she lost the arm and she has had plenty of time to get used to it. If asked, she will tell you that it was claimed during her service in the military, but never specifies which nation she fought for. It can be gathered, however, that she held a high-ranking position during her time there.
Ilsevel’s military training is the obvious source of her fighting prowess. She is deadly with the longsword, and gives guest instruction at the garrison several times a month. When she spars with the soldiers, she exclusively uses her offhand to give them a fighting chance. Through these lessons, she is aware of Odd and his position in the city guard, and keeps an interested eye on his progress.
In general, Ilsevel is a strong advocator of diplomacy. She believes that anyone can be reasoned with if they are willing to listen to what she has to say, and most people can be made willing to listen. Those who seek to better themselves, and do not shy away from hard work, are likely to enjoy her respect, but she detests the lazy and close-minded. She is also a firm believer in being on time.
The Durantes and the Prescotts are well-acquainted, but Ilsevel harbors a private and intense distaste for Eloise and her son, a sentiment which is shared by the rest of the Durante family.
Ilsevel is rather fond of children, and is quite invested in Hasten and her future. One of her personal goals is to make Ashfell safer for Hasten and tielfings like her.
As a mother, Ilsevel is very supportive of Eloenn’s intellectual pursuits, though she admits that they are more Fennaen’s domain than hers. She has made sure that Eloenn is competent with a blade and a bow, though Eloenn doesn’t much care for physical forms of combat. Ilsevel tries to encourage her daughter to spend more time outside, and away from her books, with little success.
Ilsevel greatly enjoys making and strengthening connections with the people around her, and is known for hosting dinner parties for friends and those she has taken an interest in. Local businesses and organizations often try to get in touch with her for financial support, which she will provide if she deems their cause a worthy contribution to society. She happens to be rather shrewd when it comes to these potential investment opportunities, and prides herself on her ability to identify those with less than noble intentions.
