Ashfell

Fifth Session
10/30/16
  • We all take our seats around a large round table.
  • Odd tries to convince Ethan to share a chair with him, but this isn’t the hovel and Ethan says he has to act dignified.
  • After we solved the murder, certain factions form. Because the noble council no longer has the strength it once had, the nobles are only one faction.
  • Each of the factions can’t agree who to put forward to run the city. There was lots of fighting until they decide that we’re heroes and each faction picks one of us.
  • What we say publically tends to make things happen
  • We have a hand in directing the city
  • Riley sets aside a large meeting room in the Customs House where we can meet and decide what to do.
  • We meet with our factions individually, then make decisions privately with each other.
  • The first things we get together to discuss is about whether or not to execute Catarina for the murder of her husband.
  • The nobles want her dead. She killed a noble and hid her children.
  • Daggart thinks she’s dangerous, but extremely talented in alchemy. Keep her alive, but locked up. Teach others.
  • The public mainly knows about the death of the governor, not the extent of how weakened the nobles have become. The nobles aren’t publicizing the extent of her crimes.
  • In Ashfell, if you’re a noble who murders another noble, you get exiled or locked in your house.
  • In this case, it wouldn’t been weird to have a public execution to discourage this behaviour.
  • She has shown contempt for society
  • We don’t know where her daughters are. The nobles want to find them, suspect that she killed them too. Level-headed advisors think the nobles still want to marry them off.
Catarina doesn’t seem to care if she lives or dies. Would like to live, but mostly wants her daughters to remain safe.
  • Daggart fears that exiling Catarina, she’ll end up living comfortably in Two Rivers. She has a lot of potential wealth outside the city. It’d be the same as letting her off the hook.
  • Two daughters, ten and eight years old.
  • We all agree, totally unanimously, to leave the daughters alone, and to sentence Catarina to a life in service to the city (state alchemist).
  • We decide that the garrison is the best place to keep her locked up right now. Don’t want other nobles killing her. Want her to look imprisoned.
  • Reckonth does a fly-by and we all high-five him.
  • Overtime we start settling into our roles.
  • The city goes along with what we said, cause we saved the city. Our decisions become excused. Even if they disagree, they’ll come up with reasons why we’re right.
  • We start getting details and information that we didn’t have before, that no one had before.
  • Us and the new ruling council discover just how dire the situation was in the city without anyone realizing it.
  • Svend was good at putting on a brave face and keeping morale up, but he was under a lot of pressure.
  • Oldtown – extreme overpopulation
  • Everyone is overtaxed except for the nobility.
  • The city is sitting on a lot of extra income, raw resources, but it’s not getting back out into the city and there are too many people
  • Large group of dwarves camping in the middle of the city. Some people, reforming businesses, joining caravans, etc. But the large majority have nowhere to go. They’re refugees asking for a place to stay
  • The city, across all strata, wants to get them out.
  • Anti-dwarf sentiment until one dwarf shows up – “We found something”
  • Dwarves find “dwarf sign” no one has noticed
  • Indicate underground tunnels, secret passages to those tunnels. The dwarves explore these and say they can live under the city and grow those super nutritious mushrooms. Combat the overpopulation and hunger.
  • Win-win, we luck out.
  • The dwarves are stoneworkers, and the bones of the city are stone. They offer to tear down the wood built over the stone and make Ashfell what it was supposed to be.
  • In Greenwall, seem to have built from the outside out.
  • But they need stone. There are records of a quarry (wizards/Eloenn can tell us) to the northwest, but the bridge was destroyed. Someone destroyed it on purpose. They want to fix it.
  • We’re pretty on-board.
  • The reason Svend didn’t know about dwarf kidnappings is that the guard is stretched really thin. No news from outside the city.
  • People have different ideas to increase the guard. Some people suggest draft.
  • Then Brog shows up, he has a mercenary army of goblins and will work for Ashfell (for gold). He’ll keep the goblins busy.
  • We agree to hire him, but also want to improve the guard with Ashfell citizens.
  • Daggart was in charge of the guard. The nobles aren’t a fan. There’s a big call to replace Daggart.
  • Daggart knew that the guard was stretched to the limits, didn’t know anything about what was going on outside the city. Svend told him there was other information coming in, so he didn’t question it too much.
  • Daggart was exhausted, seems almost relieved at the idea of being fired. But he’s into our reforms.
  • He supports hiring Brog, it energizes him.
  • Suggests getting the noble sons trained as officers.
  • Some people want Daggart’s assistant to take over, some want Ilsevel.
  • People would be into having Odd be in charge (Odd’s not into it).
  • We want to keep Daggart. We trust him.
  • Eloenn asks Ilsevel to be a bit more hands-on with the guard. Ilsevel insists on two leaders, one a liaison with the mercenary army, one keeping an eye on things inside the city. Riley nominates her mother as the liaison.
  • Our decisions are unpopular at first, but once the goblins start proving themselves extremely useful at stopping centaurs, and getting us a lot of info about the area outside the city, opinion turns around.
  • No one is going to the church of Ishkur. People call for it to be closed. Aleril says no, wants to be in charge of the church, bring it back to what it should be. But there’s a lot of suspicion directed at the church as a whole.
  • Overpowering majority ask for the church to be closed.
  • Little by little, Ishkur has started speaking to them again, because of Aleril’s work.
  • Aleril is going out, healing the sick, taking in the poor and disadvantaged.
  • Riley argues for tradition and stability.
  • Levi agrees, calls for support for the church of Ishkur.
  • We want to leave it open, do a PR campaign.
  • All of this happens over the course of a year.
  • Towards the end of that period, Harper’s doing his thing and one day he decides to drop in with an orphan, to deliver it to Arlo. He discovers Arlo kind of hidden, burying the body of a child. There’s a confrontation. Arlo tells Harper that he’s trying to avoid a panic.
  • Arlo shows Harper that this child (five or six) has a spider’s mandible in its mouth, instead of teeth.
  • He doesn’t want people to find it and panic.
  • Harper sends a messenger, an older orphan boy, to deliver the message to us while we’re in a meeting.
  • While he’s talking to us, Eloenn looks up and sees someone standing behind Riley who wasn’t there before
  • A man, dressed finely, a silhouette. Details, but darkness from head to toe. Leaning on Riley’s chair.
  • Eloenn casts Detect Thoughts, directed at the man. First she feels very cold. Then she feels anticipation for a party.
  • She doesn’t sense anyone else in the room that shouldn’t be there. The guy is just chilling.
  • Xan notices too. She shoots a firebolt at him. The firebolt streaks over Riley’s head. The light flares and then the figure is gone.
  • It didn’t feel like any thoughts Eloenn has felt before. A voice echoing miles away.
  • Eloenn and Xan sort of explain what’s going on.
  • Riley spots shadows coalescing behind Odd and Ethan. They form a man and start walking toward the door.
  • Riley chases him, yelling at him. He’s leisurely heading down the hall.
  • Eloenn tires to probe his mind deeper, but the voice feels far away and he winks out again.
  • The door opens at the end of the hall. A shadow woman in very very fine clothing, nicer than modern nobles, she dances into the hall, a little spin, her dress flows around her.
  • A bewildered person looks out, super confused.
  • Different brain. Still cold, still distant, intense excitement at the coming party.
  • Riley asked the confused person, screaming has started downstairs. They said the dancing woman appeared in his room and danced in front of the door until he opened it.
  • The woman is dancing in the common room, gathering things that aren’t there. She dances out the front door. Two more figures of men either walk through walls or coalesce and join her, going out the front door.
  • Riley tries to calm everyone down. Everyone’s pretty frozen in their seats. She says something reassuring and heads out the front door.
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth up to follow them.
  • Riley can see a lot of ghost. Eerie blue-green glow from behind the clouds in the sky, moon not cutting through.
  • Glow forms a snake, heading northwest.
  • Mysterious abandoned castle is also that way.
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth into the clouds, and instantly loses contact with him.
  • Thousands of people, thousands of silhouettes, pouring out of the stone structures of Oldtown. People are fleeing into their houses to get away from them. The streets are full. They’re walking towards the King’s Road.
  • Eloenn doesn’t remember much, but a long time ago there was a holiday to commemorate a party that used to be thrown everyone 100 years. Three night party, starting at sundown, ends at sunup. All references to the party are vague, hasn’t been done in centuries.
  • Clothing of the silhouettes is finery, much nicer than today’s nobles.
  • It was difficult for Reckonth to tell, but the silhouettes were coming out of side-streets that lead to the Greenwall, so the ghosts are coming from there as well.
  • There’s a lot of screaming, but we haven’t seen anyone dying.
  • Riley’s following the ghosts, so is Xan. The streets are very crowded. If you try to touch one, they wink out of existence and reform. Don’t acknowledge anything going on around them.
  • As they come out of the houses or whatever, they seem excited, talking without sound, but once they get into the street, they fall into lockstep.
  • If we follow them, we end up on the King’s Road and the ghosts are heading out of the city. They don’t seem to be hurting anyone.
  • Eloenn goes home to do research and resummon Reckonth.
  • When the sun rises, it’s extremely cloudy and misty. The silhouettes fade, but it feels like they’re still there, you just can’t seem them.
  • The road they’re following doesn’t seem to be there anymore, heading north and swinging west.
  • Grassland, rolling hills.
  • Riley can tell they’re following the eerie snake-like light in the sky. Toward the mountains in the northwest. Hasn’t been explored in a long time, until the dwarves re-built the bridge that goes to the quarry.
  • Odd’s with Callum
  • Enid with Riley
  • Eloenn summons Reckonth, he only appears as a raven.
  • Almost as if someone has tried to conceal any history on those mountains and the castle. * One book about that area, someone has scribbled over the name of the castle and most of the information. The spell Mending helps a bit.
  • What she can gather is that there was a noble family that essentially protected Ashfell, saw it in a feudal sense. Ruled for some hundreds of years. Very little context for the history. Don’t know how long ago.
  • She gets the sense that it’s one family, five or six people over many hundreds of years, not a lineage.
  • Could be elves, it’d fit if it was dwarves, but castle doesn’t make sense. Could be tieflings
  • Ashfell was aware of them. Everyone 100 years, they’d have a three day party, thrown by a specific member of the family (different one each time). So-and-so threw Dance of Illusions. * Each dance has a specific name. All other names are redacted.
  • Nothing like happened last 100 years. The bridge has been down over 600 years.
  • Eloenn takes the information to her parents. They are equally dumbfounded.
  • Research on ghosts makes it seem like these are indeed ghosts. “A person who was a silhouette, don’t acknowledge anything around them, living out some past event.”
  • There are undead things that can attack people, but the type of story this lines up with, this type of ghost doesn’t attack people
  • Eloenn sends her raven around with a message to meet back up at the Custom’s House.
  • They see Reckonth as a rotting dead raven with white eyes, losing feathers. But he looks normal to Eloenn, and he looks normal once the sun comes up.
  • We all meet up and Eloenn starts to explain things, but Riley says they need to walk and talk. Eloenn gathers up her notes and books and we head out of the city, to the quarry. Daggart shows up, says good, I was gonna tell you to go. He’ll keep guards in the streets to keep the peace.
  • Eloenn can tell us that there used to be a road, but it was dug up. Very weird, it was a lot of work.
  • We continue riding toward the quarry. Where the hills and mountains start getting rocky, there’s fog that doesn’t fade or thin out when the sun rises.
  • Eloenn casts Detect Magic and senses something watching us, something bad.
  • She whispers to people through Reckonth, to let them know.
  • Seems like it’s getting very dark, very fast. Seems like twilight, we’re concerned about horses’ footing.
  • No ghosts yet, Reckonth still looks normal.
  • We decide to lead the horses. They’re quite, but not too tense.
  • Just like the night before, we’d guess the moment the sun sets, we see the glowing light form, starting to the northwest and trailing toward Ashfell. Over our heads.
  • Not long after that, the first silhouette forms on the path behind us and walks past us. Seem like it was there before but we couldn’t see it.
  • We don’t recognize this area at all. We’d be afraid of being lost if we weren’t on a road. We haven’t reached the bridge yet.
  • Reckonth is losing feathers, according to everyone else.
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth out to find the bridge, he’s gone for a long time, but he says the bridge is just ahead.
  • Eloenn casts Detect Magic again. There’s something sideways about anything magic Eloenn looks at. Slight strangeness to herself, definite strangeness to Reckonth.
  • We’re in a heavily forested area. Towering, tall, tops lost in the mist.
  • Eloenn puts a symbol on a tree to make sure we aren’t going in circles. She meant to do a glowing phoenix sigil, but it comes out as a red raven.
  • The horses start getting bothered by the silhouettes.
  • All dressed for the same party. One era’s worth of party.
  • Eloenn studies them closely. While they’re all dressed similarly, don’t all have the same body type. Nobles tend to be thin or heavy, not muscular. Some of these silhouettes are manual laborers, some have had many children, all dress fine, but different underneath the clothes.
  • Not in formation, but not just enough space for them to walk at equal speed and not bumping into each other.
  • The mist is rolling out over the forest, out toward Ashfell.
  • Riley finds, on the side of the road, a wolf the size of a bear. Recently dead, killed by spears. The spears are gone.
  • The dwarves would have told us that there are unnaturally large wolves in the mountains, but no people. No people in the mountains.
  • The horses are very spooked.
  • The ghosts all look human.
  • The fog is exhausting us, we guess it’s about 9 at night.
  • We know the trees thin out before the bridge, and it’s only getting thicker. Eloenn sees no bridge through Reckonth.
  • It’s early fall.
  • We find a little clearing to make camp. Eloenn sets up an alarm around camp.
  • Ethan snuggles up to Odd.
  • Xan and Eloenn keep watch.
  • In the night, we hear distant wolves howling. As Eloenn is studying, she realizes that she can easily read by the glow of the light in the sky. But it’s very very quiet. An uncomfortably quiet, like the wind is holding in a scream. Painfully quiet.
  • In the morning, the trees don’t look the same. When the sun came up, the trees are in a different formation, not as packed. Still mist. Sun is muted. But it doesn’t feel as crowded.
  • Above the treeline, it looks different, but Eloenn can’t put her finger on how.
  • Riley hasn’t experienced anything like this in the Greenwall.
  • Detect Thoughts during the night revealed no one around.
  • We continue on. Riley attempts to remain optimistic.
  • It’s still pretty quiet.
  • Enid sees something buried in the leaves, to the side of the path. It’s a child’s toy. An old gross teddy bear. It’s not magical. Enid doesn’t want it, so Eloenn takes it.
  • She examines it closer. It’s extremely old, 20-40 years, but Eloenn can’t believe it has been out here the whole time, it would’ve rotted away.
  • Some of the party members are reluctant to take the bear, but Eloenn wants to keep it, thinking it’ll be useful. As per Xan’s suggestion, she puts the bear in a handkerchief sling and hangs it from her saddle.
  • Sometime later, Ethan spots something person-shaped. It’s a scarecrow, hanging from a pole like it would be in a field, but it’s in a forest.
  • It’s pretty far from the road, 100 feet. Eloenn looks closer with Reckonth.
  • Definitely creepy. It has stuffed hands. Rusty knives in place of the fingers.
  • Where the farmer gloves meet the jacket, it isn’t stuffed with hay, but black feathers. Eloenn calls Reckonth back.
  • Doesn’t look as old as the bear.
  • Xan launches a fire bolt at it. It bursts immediately into flame. It turns its face to look at us. It falls off the pole, in a heap on the ground. It reaches out and grabs the pole and gets to its feet. Starts lurching toward us.
  • Reckonth flies over, hails it.
  • Its head falls off, a swarm of crows fly out of it, dispersing into the sky. It collapses into a heap of burning cloth.
  • Eloenn took her eye off the bear and it has disappeared.
  • Eloenn puts the fire out, it was probably going to go out on its own anyway.
  • After a bit of travel, we realize we got turned around on the path. We see the campground we woke up in. There’s still a sleeping roll there, and there’s someone in it.
  • Reckonth sees brown hair but not much else.
  • Xan stealths over and taps on their head. They don’t react. They pull the roll down, and it’s a corpse.
  • Ethan feels very strongly that this corpse looks exactly like him.
  • Everyone else doesn’t think it looks anything like Ethan.
  • To everyone but Ethan, it looks like an ancient dried out corpse, mummified. To Ethan it looks like someone who died yesterday.
  • He thinks it’s his twin brother.
  • Riley gets Ethan away from the body.
  • When Odd looks down back toward Ashfell, he sees the teddy bear. It’s facing us, but just sitting there.
  • Eloenn doesn’t want the bear any more, Xan sneaks the bear into their cape. Ethan is very unsettled.
  • Knowing that this can happen, we’re laser-focused, and Riley helps keep us on track. We make good time back to the scarecrow remains and continue on our way.
  • Time passes and the trees start thinning out.
  • There are a large number of crows and other large black birds watching from the tree tops, lining the path, not making any noise, just watching.
  • Riley keeps us moving at a brisk pace.
  • Odd glances behind us. The teddy bear is behind us again, sitting in the middle of the path, in the fog, even though Xan was sure they had the bear in-hand.
  • Our horses are stopped, but Riley can swear they hear hooves. Eloenn hears hoofbeats coming from the path ahead. She’s also the first to see a figure in the fog riding down the path toward us.
  • Riley gets out her bow.
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth forward.
  • The horse is dead and the rider is basically skeleton. Had armor, but rust is flaking off. Looks like it should fall apart.
  • Eloenn does Detect Magic, it’s intensely magical. Nothing indicating it is being maintained, the air is sustaining it.
  • Riley shoots an arrow into its eye socket. The skull snaps back and lolls, but it continues riding past.
  • The horse and its rider disappear back into the mist. Rides past the bear.
  • We continue on, losing track of the bear.
  • We see the first rise of the stone bridge and we hear water. A distant waterfall.
  • Through the mist, on the bridge, Eloenn sees a very large, well-built, black carriage, with two horses attached to it. The horses are alive. The biggest she’s seen.
  • The carriage is stopped in the roadway. A few yards onto the bridge. The horses are tossing their heads and growling.
  • As we approach, one of the side doors opens.
  • The horse eyes aren’t on fire. The carriage is nothing that would be found in Ashfell. It’s so big, even eight regular horses couldn’t move it. These two horses are huge enough to move it. No driver, but there is a seat for driver.
  • The door opens on its own and nothing comes out. Reckonth sees nothing inside. It looks empty.
  • Mid to late afternoon.
  • Riley cautiously approaches. The inside is very nice, very fine. Plush seats. Room for all of us to fit inside.
  • Detect Magic. The horses have traces of magic about them, but they themselves are not magical. Enlarge was not cast on them. The carriage is not magical.
  • Riley starts to unhitch one, and it stomps on the stone bridge. It has red eyes.
  • If we shut the door with no one inside, it latches, then unlatches, and swings open again. Same happens with Reckonth inside.
  • Bridge is about an hour away from the quarry.
  • As far as we know, after the bridge, the road goes straight to the quarry.
  • We don’t want to leave our horses behind, so we ride past. The big horses watch us but don’t move.
  • We cross the bridge without incident. The mist is thinner, the sun is breaking through better. Trees continue to thin. Landscape is rocky. It feels like things are looking up.
  • We travel for about 45 minutes, then Odd hears a jumble of noise from behind us. We get out of the way just in time, the carriage runs full speed by. They blow right off the road, on a path that we didn’t notice at first. The carriage is heading down a rocky path away from us.
  • Eloenn marks the path with a glowing raven (unintentional, again).
  • We move on and we overlook the quarry. They aren’t very many dwarves, but they are there. They won’t come out of their tents. They threaten us until they know who we are, then they let us in.
  • They describe ridiculous freaky shit and they want us to fix it. About the same time as the freaky shit in the city, same kind of stuff as in the forest.
  • Have heard people weeping in the dark, creatures trying to attack them, ghosts, noises they can’t explain or describe, coming from farther north.
  • Most people went into the quarry to get away from all this nonsense.
  • Riley reassures them that it shouldn’t last more than one night. And we’re going to investigate.
  • We leave the horses with the dwarves and follow where the carriage went.
  • As we’re following the carriage tracks, we can see there used to be a road there, but it definitely isn’t there now.
  • The sun is setting when we reach the end. We see the tracks have continued over a slope, as we round the slope, we catch sight of a striking and amazing castle. We’ve see the parapets from Ashfell on a clear day, but now we see it’s huge, sprawling over the base of the cliff and up it. Can’t imagine how anyone could’ve built it. It’s hanging off the side of the mountain. Right on a cliff face.
  • Ahead of us, there’s a chasm. Across from it is an upright drawbridge. The tracks from the carriage went right off the side. The drawbridge was not lowered. We get the sense that it wouldn’t been bad for us if we’d been inside. Looking over the side, we just see water way below, it’s dark though.
  • The gap is very wide, 300-400 feet across.
  • The construction is like what’s underneath the Greenwall, but bigger and better, better preserved.
  • The mist is rising up along the mountain. Riley sees a “way” that slopes down, sees torchlight.
  • Reckonth just sees a light in the fog, drifting down the path, theoretically carried by someone we can’t see. Path runs downward and along the chasm.
  • Ethan can’t see in the dark. Odd picks him up. Ethan says he just needs his hand held. Odd blushes and puts him down, takes his hand.
  • The path leads us around a curve that makes us lose sight of the castle. At the base, the light moves across a rope bridge.
  • It’s still well above the water, looks super old and rickety. Doesn’t give out under the pressure of mage hand.
  • Enid runs across the bridge no problem.
  • Eloenn is slower, holding onto the sides because it’s swaying. She makes it across. She uses magic to clean her hands.
  • Xan goes next. She slips halfway across, but she catches herself and gets across.
  • Odd and Ethan go. They get two-thirds across when one of the boards breaks under Odd’s foot. Ethan grabs him, barely saving him from falling down into Savior’s lake. They make it the rest of the way.
  • Riley goes last, she’s slipping and sliding, but she manages to make it too.
  • We find ourselves on a strange platform. There are ancient gargoyles, wind and rain has striped off the features. Looks like the wall has a faded face. Featureless skulls pushing out from the rock.
  • In the side of the cliff, two sputtering torches to either side of a doorway. Down the tunnel, we see the torch we were following disappearing. The two torches don’t seem magical.
  • We head down the dark tunnel. Shorter than we thought, it dips down. When we start ascending again, we see that the light we’ve been following is in the doorway at the top, just a floating ball of light, no person attached. It disappears as soon as we look at it.
  • As we get to where the light was, we see that the tunnel lets out to the side of the drawbridge. There’s a garden built into the side. The whisp comes back, casts light on a gathering place. A theater almost, but we realize it’s a gallows. Seats are gathered around it in a semi-circle. Eight ropes are set up. The whisp is floating in the center, above the stage.
  • The seats are three sets of stands.
  • As we enter, the whisp drifts toward the wall, part has collapsed and we can get into the walkway and the drawbridge.
  • We have to pass the gallows. As we approach the collapsed part of the wall, the breeze kicks up, and Eloenn hears a strange strained sound of a rope being pulled behind her. She looks through Reckonth and sees an elf body hanging from the rope nearest us. She turns around and sees nothing. She taps Riley, who also sees nothing.
  • Enid feels something wrong. Every time she looks at Reckonth, he’s looking away, but she feels like he was just looking at her. Reckonth looks dead again.
  • Riley hears music on the other side of the wall, faint.
  • Reckonth doesn’t feel weird to Eloenn. Xan touches him and sees old skin and feathers come off of him. Eloenn sees a larger number of feathers than normal come off, but there are more feathers underneath. Xan sees dead rotting skin.
  • Detect Magic – the mist is magic, everywhere around us.
  • We go to investigate the music. We enter a broad walkway that goes from the drawbridge to the courtyard before you’d enter the castle proper. The doors going in are so old, they’ve collapsed in different directions so there’s a gap.
  • Walking along are these shadowy figures, walking through the collapsed doors. The familiar blue-green light is shining out from within.
  • If we look up, the snake is reaching out toward Ashfell. But above the castle, the snake spirals down into the castle. The cloud make it impossible to see where the spiral is ending.
    There are no carriage tracks.
  • The music is coming from the courtyard beyond the doors. None of us have heard it before. Piano-like. String instrument on keys, multiple of this instrument are playing.
  • We slide inside, have to pop the silhouettes to get in. There’s a large round courtyard. In the center, there used to be a fountain, but it’s collapsed. Half is kinda still there, leaning into a hole in the ground. The shadows are dancing, paired off around the outside, moving inward as they go, one by one topple into the hole.
  • If we look up, storm clouds made of glowing blue ghosts, writhing and thrashing and providing light for the courtyard.
  • Eloenn casually insults everyone in the party.
View
Fourth Session
10/16/16
  • The governor was murdered relatively recently, they just found out
  • Did not come to an important meeting
  • He summoned “The Council of Nobles” to discuss the unrest after the goblin invasion
  • He didn’t show up
  • He was stabbed to death.
  • All still in the garrison
  • Daggart has suggested to anyone of importance that they should be inside the garrison until things in the city settle down.
  • There are twelve families on the noble council
  • Daggart is in a panic
  • The people he would normally assign to this are out in the city trying to restore order.
  • He isn’t sure how he’ll convince the rest of the city that the goblins aren’t coming back
  • He’s testing the waters, seeing if we want to be detectives
  • He hasn’t been inside the room, doesn’t know how many times Svend was stabbed.
  • Murder happened within the hour
  • Rosie has locked down the crime scene, with the guards assigned to her
  • No one’s really leaving the garrison except guards
  • Eloenn says the murderer could be disguised as a guard, Daggart orders the garrison locked down
  • He takes us into the garrison, throws orders at everyone, everything is in an uproar.
  • Svend was quartered high up in the garrison, in the most luxurious quarters. Near to where Daggart stayed
  • When we get to the door, there are guards on either side, going in and out of the room
  • Svend’s body is still in bed, stabbed many many times in the chest
  • It’s early afternoon now
  • The guards there don’t know anything, the guards that were here aren’t awake yet. Possibly drugged
  • Harper brings up the masked man, Daggart is annoyed.
  • He rubs the bridge of his nose. Without leadership they can’t bring the city in order to defend themselves.
  • Without the governor, leadership falls to the council.
  • Daggart sent his right hand man to get Svend for the meeting, found the guards asleep, saw Svend dead
  • Didn’t touch anything except the door
  • Door was unlocked
  • Nearby rooms, Daggart’s room across the hall, Daggarts closest people in the nearby rooms, but no one has been up there
  • Policy says it’s up to Svend, whether he’d want to lock the door.
  • Eloenn says they should hire elven guards
  • Both guards were human.
  • Daggart doesn’t know where his wife is. She had her own quarters with the children.
  • He’ll send someone to go check.
  • They’ve found some people with medical magic talents. Sends the order down to check out the sleeping guards
  • Eloenn goes over to the body, but is too squeamish to tell anything about it
  • Eloenn sets up an alarm spell around the body.
  • Lyulf can tell the murderer has killed before, weapon they’re not as familiar with.
  • Blade thick, not as sharp as it could’ve been, had to do work
  • Harper notices that Svend was definitely overpowered, caught asleep
  • Svend’s right hand has dried blood on it, around the thumb, bruise on forearm, but not injured on the hand otherwise.
  • There aren’t trails of blood out of the room
  • Blood splatter seems strange. There’s a slight trail that goes under the bed. There’s a knife there.
  • Eloenn casts detect magic. The blade has been used for magical purposes in the past, not currently enchanted.
  • Used for religious purposes. Eloenn can tell this is a very old sacrificial blade, mostly considered ceremonial now. In the past, used for rituals for the church of Ishkur.
  • Church is pretty mainstream now, worst they used to do was sacrifice animals. More rural members would have done it, not a recent practice.
  • It’s been many decades since the blade was used with magic attached to the blade. The magic traces are pretty well ingrained.
  • Eloenn picks it up with mage hand
  • There’s blood all over the knife. Not really any kind of hand print.
  • Bruises on Svend’s forearms, some struggle, but quickly overpowered, definitely surprised.
  • Riley looks closer, she thinks the attacker was one person, both very strong, very prepared, very agile. Surprised Svend in the night, when he was asleep, didn’t wake up until stabbing started.
  • From what she can tell, Svend got one attack in, but the attacker overpowered him. Probably used his knees to hold him down. Enough weight to keep him still during the stabbing.
  • Svend has an average build, kinda thin. Frail from stress. Surprising how beaten down he seems. He didn’t seem this beaten down before, very charismatic.
  • Daggart remembers seeing Svend go to bed early, shortly after sundown.
  • Last changing of the guard around midnight.
  • Svend was missed in the morning, but it was so chaotic, and no one wanted to pressure him, so they were giving him his space.
  • Sometime between midnight to eight in the morning, for the guards’ shift.
  • Body was found around nine.
  • Daggart doesn’t know the last time he saw Gregori.
  • Daggart sends for someone to collect Adherent.

  • We head to see the guards who’d been put to sleep.
  • The medical area is crazy, dealing with aftermath of attack.
  • No one’s really checking on the guards. A very exhausted priest shows up, tells us nothing magical has been done to them. Probably poison. Priest of Ivar.
  • Doesn’t know what poison. Nothing on-hand that’s safe to use has worked.
  • Harper, checking over the guards, makes an educated guess that it was a poison derived from some kind of lotus. Rumors and legends of a plant from some distant land, random and exotic. Plant that puts you to sleep, its vines wrap around you and slowly kill you. Can derive a poison that can put anyone to sleep, if they use too much, they’ll never wake up.
  • The guards don’t look like they’ll wake up any time soon.
  • Adding on, Eloenn knows that there are other just as foreign and exotic antidotes that can wake someone up. Research in the past, a lot of the effects of the Black Lotus have been exaggerated. They’ll probably wake up in a week at most, without repeated doses. Don’t seem like they’ve had that big of a dose though. Should be awake sometime in the next twelve hours.
  • Eloenn can tell that if the Black Lotus hadn’t been processed, it would be airborne spores. But it dies when it’s taken away from its vine. Only other way they could’ve been dosed would be by drinking.
  • Daggart will send his assistant to see if they can find who was stationed at the base of the stairs.
  • The assistant has a week of beard, hasn’t slept more than fifteen minutes in the last four days.
  • The guards’ gear has been stowed next to them. No liquids. Mostly clothes. Armor has been given to other guards.

  • A group of people rush in, swarm around Daggart, push us away. Speaking in panicked tones. Daggart bolts away, and we chase him. Into the garrison, into the closed off banquet hall.
  • Daggart gets through, fifteen guards block our path.
  • In the banquet hall, someone is laying on one of the tables.
  • Eloenn demands entrance in a fancy tone.
  • Daggart smacks the guards, and they let us in.
  • Big feast, twelve nobles all slumped over.
  • No one we know well, not Eloenn’s parents or Eloise. Nobles Eloenn vaguely recognizes.
  • Two of them are already dead, definitely overdoses on some kind of poison. Lyulf guesses it’s the same thing that knocked out the guards, larger dose. Another dies as we’re there.
  • Daggart’s yelling for healers. Magically inclined priests comes in, Lyulf tries to induce vomiting. Trying to leech one.
  • But one-by-one they all die. The whole Council is dead.
  • Lyulf asks who is next in command, Daggart doesn’t know, this has never happened before.
  • Eloenn knows (cause she’s a huge nerd) the next in line in this situation is the major factions in the city, determined by rules she doesn’t know (has the book but not on hand). Top number selects representatives to rule in the interim.
  • Daggart is assuming complete command of the garrison, locking the city down, imposing martial law.
  • Promoting us to secret police. No one’s doing anything until we know who’s doing this and execute them.
  • There are wine in the goblets. Two pitchers of wine on the table, both used. One’s three quarters empty, other half empty. Glasses are all shattered or tipped over. Were holding these glasses when the poison would’ve affected them.
  • Rounded up the serving staff.
  • Lyulf takes samples of wine, fills his wineskin.
  • They didn’t get far into their meals.
  • The staff says they didn’t do it. Don’t remember anything out of the ordinary. All keep talking at once.
  • One woman served the wine. She just did her job. Went into the kitchen, there was a platter of wine glasses, platter with decanters. Brought them in, filled them, and left. Harper thinks she looks completely honest. Terrified. Using the truth as a shield. Going through the facts slowly over and over.
  • A man in cook’s attire says he filled the decanters, doesn’t remember it specifically, but he usually does it.
  • We go into the kitchen, he points at a cask that’s been opened. He set out the glasses. Points out the cupboard, with dozens more glasses.
  • Eloenn knows the poison has to be in liquid form, not on the glasses.
  • Lyulf takes samples from the cask of wine too.
  • The cask came in from the cellar, has been here for decades. Don’t normally host parties here, this is the nicest oldest drink.
  • Possibly most obvious choice to serve nobles.
  • Eloenn investigates the cask, definitely wasn’t tampered with before it was opened.
  • Someone would’ve taste-tested it, they are still alive. The cook’s apprentice, a younger kid.
  • Riley is scary, but Eloenn is very soothing. The boy is smitten.
  • His boss opened the cask, and ordered him to taste it. He tasted it and it was fine. They filled the decanters, set out the glasses.
  • Kicks his feet, glances at Eloenn. Did let Catarina’s personal maid taste some too. Just came to visit him. Doesn’t happen often.
  • She asked if she could have some, he let her pour it herself from one of the decanters.
  • Riley looks at Daggart like, go get her.
  • Daggart pulls Riley aside, no chance in hell. The girl is with Catarina, in her quarters, in mourning. Without solid evidence, he can’t do anything.
  • Daggart sends his assistant to make a delicate request for the girl to come forward.
  • The Council of Nobles are the chosen representatives from the most important families.
  • Daggart sends someone to ask after Ilsevel.

  • Guards reappear with the Adherent in tow. We’re taken to the barracks, where the Adherent is being kept.
  • We’re pulled aside, they searched his room at the inn, one of his robes, hidden in a closet, it was a torn robe of Ishkur covered in blood.
  • We come in, and he perks up. Did you find him?
  • Eloenn says the master has sacrificed himself
  • Well I’m fucked.
  • Riley – you need to tell me everything
  • With my master gone, I just got promoted. Long moment of contemplation. He doesn’t know what’s going on here. Doesn’t think Ishkur would want him to stay silent and let injustice happen.
  • His name is Aleril. Him and his master were sent here by the Circle of Ishkur (based in Two Rivers). The circle was growing concerned because Ishkur couldn’t communicate with the church in Ashfell. They were sent to make contact, find out what was going on.
  • Found a lot of nothing. The church privately admitted that there had been no divine inspiration or miracles or magic from Ishkur for a long time.
  • The previous high priest stepped down out of shame, that’s when Gregori stepped up. Has been trying to reconnect with Ishkur ever since. Perform ceremonies as best they can in the meantime.
  • Gregori was high in the ranks of the temple of Ivar, next in line to be high priest. Suddenly switched to Ishkur, worked his way quickly up the ranks there. Very effective and devout cleric. Not completely out of the realm of possibility that a cleric would switch deities.
  • It’s been about ten years since Gregori switched religions. Ishkur gradually went silent around a year ago. More and more often, Ishkur stopped answering clerics.
  • Gregori became high priest very recently, less than a year. Would’ve taken some time to decide who would be the next high priest. Which priest becomes the face of the organization.
  • In Ivar, the high priest is elected, a figure in the community.
  • Eloenn thinks they should’ve sent someone to the Circle.
  • Aleril agrees. This is all very strange.
  • He knows nothing about the masked man and the demons.
  • A priest of Ishkur confronted with something like that, sounds like it’s against gods. Aleril guesses that his master thought it threatened everything, including Ishkur himself. Any true priest would react the same.
  • Riley brings up the bloody robes.
  • Someone’s framing me.
  • Who? He doesn’t know.
  • He’s not staying with the church of Ishkur, staying in an inn. It would not be difficult for someone to come in. The robes were ceremonial.
  • Riley asks Eloenn to conjure an illusion of the knife we found. Aleril confirms that it belonged to his master. They stayed in the same room.
  • He’s been coming and going pretty frequently, been trying to help people. His leg is pretty much better.
  • In general, looking better, but still a little rough. Doesn’t seem like he could overpower Svend easily. It would be a struggle.
  • We all believe him, based on our insight.
  • He’s been going out, healing people, helping people however he can, sleeps for a few hours, goes back out again. Not a solid alibi.
  • It was dark when he got home, was asleep when the guards came to get him.
  • He can’t think of anyone who would want to frame him. He thought the investigation was going well, started working with the church to get the connection back. Did think it was something they’d done necessarily. Doesn’t know much about demons.
  • If what caused the disconnect was digging up the demons, sealing them up could’ve had the opposite effect. Wasn’t a solid sealing though.
  • Ilsevel is back home, she was exhausted and they sent her home before all this happened.
  • Haven’t heard anything from Catarina.
  • When we leave the room, Daggart asks if we should execute him. We say no, not yet at least.
  • Riley says we have to get the right person.
  • His face turns hard, he agrees but this is about the stability of the entire city of Ashfell.
  • No one should know the Council is dead yet. But the fact that everything has been locked down says a lot. Feeds the panic.
  • Catarina has her own personal elite guard.

  • We head to try to talk to Catarina. For some reason, she’s not in rooms like Svend’s. She’s in guest quarters, but smaller and less comfortable, more defensible. Center of garrison. More traffic there. But the whole guard group is outside the door.
  • Guards grab their weapons and turn to us.
  • Now’s not the time.
  • Eloenn says now is the perfect time.
  • Xan wants to cast sleep, but Riley is super persuasive. A guard in the back steps over and knocks on the door.
  • The door cracks open and someone steps out. Not Catarina, youngish girl. Waves us away from the guards.
  • Eloenn has seen her face before, but was never introduced. She is the handmaiden. Her name is Oksana, she is a human.
  • Catarina is in mourning. Doesn’t give a lot of details.
  • We’re out of guards’ earshot.
  • Riley asks her about the cook’s assistant in the kitchen.
  • Nothing crosses her face, but she doesn’t say anything for a long moment. She was just checking on how the preparations for the meeting were going. Catarina sent her down because she was preparing to go down herself.
  • Eloenn can tell that she’s concealing something from us.
  • Oksana’s eyes moves to each other us, crosses her arms and starts to move back to the guards. Stops and looks at Eloenn. Maybe you should think about where you saw Catarina last.
  • Alchemist’s shop.
  • She disappears back past the guards and into the room. Fifteen guards or so.
  • Eloenn peers at the guards, they look well-rested, extremely well-equipped, and fit. None tired or injured. None look paranoid or guilty looking.
  • Harper turns into a spider, sneaks across the ceiling and get in through the gap in the door.
  • Inside the room are Catarina’s servants, four or five girls. She doesn’t look broken up. Sitting, reading a book, with a glass of wine.
  • It’s well-known that she’s talented in the healing arts, there is an alchemy table.
  • Harper claws over to the table, sees a lot of vials. Tools. Nothing stands out.
  • He can tell that many of the vials are empty, the mortar and pestle has been used recently. Doesn’t know what on.
  • Everything’s unmarked, nothing’s obvious.
  • She wouldn’t have been carrying any bags, but the guards would’ve had packs.
  • There are some books. Drawers, filled with supplies that haven’t been used. Used supplies on the tables. At least two of the vials had liquid in them. Some residue on them.
  • Catarina got married to Svend when she was very young. As far as the city knows, they’re the happiest couple. The nobles all love Svend. The nobles know Catarina fairly well, know she’s polite. The lower classes don’t know her well at all.
  • No real conversation in the room.
  • Harper crawls back out of the room, waves at Riley. She scoops him off the wall. Away from the guards, Harper turns back into a boy in Riley’s arms.
  • There were no windows in the room.
  • Riley tells Daggart her suspicions, he tells us to go to the alchemy shop, to see what she got there. That could be evidence that he can act on. He’ll post guards.

  • The guards that would normally patrol the King’s Road have been recalled, now patrolling the streets. We have a written letter saying we can do whatever we want, we get to the apothecary fairly quickly.
  • Apothecary lives in his shop and is there to let us in. He seems exhausted by this whole thing, last time we saw him, everything was being attacked by goblins.
  • You guys again.
  • Riley asks what Catarina was purchasing.
  • He doesn’t know, she placed an order through him for a crate. He sent the order onto an apothecary from Two Rivers, the order went south. Crate arrived, and she paid him for the crate.
  • There was something strange about it. She frequents this shop, normally pays with a writ of credit from Svend. This time, she didn’t have a writ from Svend, she had a writ from the church of Ishkur. Was trying to buy more than the writ would cover. The writ she got from the church would’ve exactly cover the cost of the crate. She wanted certain other herbs.
  • Lists them off, shakes his head, all pretty innocuous, just mask flavor. It was very weird.
  • He was not a fan of how that all went down, the guards took over his shop. It was getting tense when the goblins attacked. They were holding him hostage.
  • He’d happily testify against her.

  • The guards will help us escort the apothecary back to the garrison, he tells Daggart what he told us. Daggart sends a LOT of guards to get Catarina.
  • Catarina and her handmaidens are brought down and separated. Guards are brought down and disarmed.
  • We check out Catarina’s room.
  • Nearly every book are books of alchemy. One speaks about Black Lotus. Eloenn summons an unseen servant and loads him up with books.
  • Harper gets the vials. Enid takes a look at them, can tell, with the help of the book, that this is definitely a reduction of Black Lotus. The drops would be enough to knock out a man for twelve hours, and these were full.
  • We go to see Oksana, demand the truth. She did what she was told to do.
  • Doesn’t want to talk, but Riley is very persuasive. The handmaiden says that Catarina killed those people. Oksana didn’t know she was helping until afterward. Catarina told her to take the vials, pour everything into the decanters, and leave.
  • Harper can tell she’s telling the truth, but not the whole truth.
  • Why? She doesn’t know, doesn’t care.
  • Oksana says as far as she knows, she got the poison from the apothecary.
  • We go to see Catarina.
  • Head laid down on the table, asleep. Eloenn shakes her gently and she wakes up.
  • She asks for wine.
  • Riley says she can have wine if she talks to us.
  • What do you want to know?
  • Tell us everything.
  • She’s a little tipsy. Rests her cheek on her fist. What’re you talking about?
  • Eloenn informs her that her husband has been killed.
  • Oh good, about time.
  • DId you not know?
  • Shrug and a smile.
  • She’s drunk and does not care.
  • E: did you poison the council of nobles?
  • Yup
  • Why?
  • Sits up, looks in the eye. Not one of you is going to marry off my daughters like they did to me.
  • All of them wanted to create a family alliance with Svend. Wanted to marry their sons to my daughters.
  • R – Who killed your husband?
  • C – It was all Gregori’s plan until it fell apart.
  • R – What was his plan?
  • He’s greedy and a fool. He came to her, earned her trust, she saw through his rouse. He thought he was being clever when he suggested that they could help each other.
  • Everything he did to try to take over the city fell apart. Goblins stopped listening to him, she was stuck in the shop because he didn’t give her enough money. Servants were overthrown by the goblins. He couldn’t deflect suspicion, it was obvious it was him.
  • E – where is he now?
  • C – ask his brother. They haven’t spoken in years, first time they saw each other was during the attack. Ever since, they’ve been inseparable.
  • Eloenn shows off an illusion of the mask the masked man wore.
  • C – that’s the mask Radu wears when he’s doing Gregori’s bidding outside the city. Next in line to be high priest of Ishkur.
  • Does she know about the mine? She laughs, what’re you talking about.
  • Harper believes everything, she’s so done, she got what she wanted. Doesn’t care anymore. Believes that she has won, her daughters are safe.
  • She doesn’t know how Gregori orchestrated all of this, the goblin attacks surprised her. All seemed like a fantasy up to that point.
  • Why did Gregori want to take over the city?
  • Pauses and thinks. No. It strikes her as strange, didn’t seem like something he wanted. Doesn’t think anyone was instructing him. Thinks it was something he felt he had to do.
  • Someone’s gotta do it, guess it’s gotta be me.
  • Not necessarily something noble, wasn’t anything high minded.
  • She wonders if he even wanted to win.
  • Catarina doesn’t know anything about the Adherent.
  • Eloenn tells Daggart that we need to find Gregori immediately. He’s been listening. Levi is coming, he’ll let the Adherent out.

  • In the time it takes us to talk it through with him, Levi comes rushing in.
  • If you’re looking for Gregori, we have to leave now. I think we can get him but he’s leaving for the churches. Levi’s worried about him.
  • We rush out, Reckonth doesn’t see Gregori from the air. We have a guard escort.
  • Gregori was acting very strange before he suddenly left. He was speaking very fatalistically. * Everything happened the way it had to, even if it wasn’t the way he wanted. He kept apologizing, didn’t say for what.
  • I’m going to meet my end with my god.
  • Gregori has a strange way of disappearing when he wants to.
  • Levi takes us to the church of Ishkur, we don’t find anything.
  • Reckonth spots Gregori rushing across the street, into the church of Ivar.
  • We spot him down a hallway, speaking to a figure in shadow. They dart into a side passage, a secret passage. Stairwell that drops down below the church. We pursue him, under the city streets.
  • Dips down farther, and suddenly the walls are metal. We’ve never seen anything like this. Steel floor. Follow the path and find Gregori inside a glass chamber with two tall thin pillars to either side.
  • Turns to face us. Hear him faintly say “I’m coming to be one with you.”
  • Grabs both pillars. There are alchemical blue-green lights on the walls. They dim and we see Gregori’s soul crawl out of his skin and dissolve. His body collapses.
  • The lights come back on and we see the mask on the other side of the glass. The man from the caves. He tries to run but he’s still injured. Turns to face us, sees he won’t get away. * Swigs a vial of something and drops to his knees. He’s done running.
  • Harper casts Purify Food and Drink, but it doesn’t work. The man falls on his face and dies.
  • Under his mask, he is Radu. Salt and pepper grey hair.
  • The room looks like the inside of a machine, metal walls, glass partitions, pylons. Walls are lined with LED bulbs, full with glowing green light.
  • Eloenn casts Detect Magic. Pylons and lights are intensely magic. Pipes and lines and wires on the ceiling, those are glowing with magic too, but slowly fading.
  • Inside the glass chamber, where Gregori’s body is, there’s a switch.
  • Doesn’t really looks like a lab. There’s this weird chamber, and hallways, but we don’t know how to open up the secret passages.
  • Doesn’t seem temple-like. Utilitarian, everything seems to have a purpose. Cold and mechanical.
  • Ilsevel’s golem was in the right ballpark, but it had artistry. There are not cogs and gears and moving parts here. Not steampunk. More advanced.
  • Eloenn tries to make Reckonth appear past the supposed secret passages, but it doesn’t work, and the magical wires glow bright.
  • Levi doesn’t go down with us. He was staring afraid at the doorway.
  • Magic is fading from Radu. There’s a void where Gregori’s body is, not even a spark of anything there.
  • Eloenn summons an unseen servant to carry out the bodies.
  • Riley guides him away so he doesn’t have to see the bodies at first.
  • Levi asks what happens. Riley tells him gently that his brother and Radu are no more. There’s a contraption down there.
  • He hangs his head, kind of expected this outcome. Affected but not surprised.
  • He doesn’t know what happened between the two of them. Gregori was the most loyal and devout person to Ivar, but suddenly turned away from everything and switched religions. Did everything not to communicate with Levi.
  • Last few days, asking about the church, asking about everything to do with it. Asking about people from the Ivar church he hadn’t been able to talk to for many years, catching up.
  • We go to check out Gregori’s quarters. Seems normal, but Levi thinks it’s wrong, it can’t be his room. Super generic. Some books, most basic religious texts. Nothing with Gregori’s writing and Gregori was a passionate writer.
  • Eloenn sends a message to Daggart. Through Reckonth.
  • The layout of the two churches is similar. The secret passage in the Ivar church has closed up, but the servant had brought the bodies up. We can’t find the original secret passage or any passages in the Ishkur church.
  • Eloenn attempts to detect magic in Gregori’s office, but doesn’t find anything.
  • Right now, the Ivar priests are out in the city. The majority of the Ishkur priests are in the garrison.

  • The city calms down. The immediate threat has been neutralized. Everyone’s pretty satisfied that Gregori was the ringleader.
  • The church of Ishkur will have a big shake-up. With Adherent’s help, they’ll route out a cult inside the church, “special prayer group” that idolized Gregori. Most of them are dead. Once they started investigating the corpses and those we captured, they could tell it was this group.
  • Eloenn learns some stuff about exotic crazy poisons from Catarina’s books, adds it to her lore book.
  • Eventually, someone finds a body in a burned house with a gouged out left eye, we figure out that he killed Svend.
  • Ilsevel could’ve told us that the assassin wasn’t killed by goblins.
  • We all advance to level 3~!
View
Third Session
10/9/16
  • Gregori left the church, THEN Levi became the high priest.
  • We’ve all had a chance to sleep, after a very long night. Sleeping in the garrison.
  • Gave Odd potions, and a new set of fairly nice armor.
  • We’re all called together once we’re up and about the next day. Into the main office of the garrison. Svend is there with a proposal for us.
  • They’re combing the city and making an assessment of the damages and what happened, where the goblins went.
  • Doesn’t have answers, but they have a clue as to where the goblins went.
  • The guard is in no position to go scouting, need what’s left of them to bring order back to the city. Chaos right now, putting out small fires, trying to find people, calm people down.
  • Wants to pay us to go scout, find out where the goblins went, if we can, figure out why this happened.
  • He thinks they were coerced or given aid, wants to know who did it.
  • Rough idea of where the goblins are going, but needs to know where their camp is.
  • Group of that size needs to keep doing military stuff to stay together.
  • Not asking us to start another fight, wants information.
  • Riley’s on board, so is Xan.
  • She offers her mercs to help the guard. Svend’ll have Daggart get in contact with them.
  • Do we need any supplies?
  • Completely out of potions, short on any healing items at all.
  • Eloenn asks how long we’ll be gone. 1-3 days.
  • He can give us rations.
  • Go out on the main road and around. Out of the city.
  • Riley asks if we should pick up anything, he doesn’t think we can gather it in quantities that would be useful. But if we can find where the goblins took their supplies.
  • Can give us manacles.
  • Eloenn checks in with Ilsevel. How’s her arm? It’s basically gone. Took it off.
  • Big clockwork golem following her around, Eloenn hasn’t seen it before.
  • Close examination – suits of armor i’ve seen around the house, this looks like if one of those had unfolded into something bigger
  • Can follow simple commands.
  • Eloenn’s unsure, but Ilsevel believes in her. Also says she can’t back out now.
  • Everyone’s family members have been checked in on, know what’s happening, have been made safe.
  • Ethan’s brother will babysit his siblings.
  • We’ve been given horses, getting ready to set out on the road.
  • Someone calls out to us. Half-elf, young, hobbling up to us. His leg is heavily bandaged and he’s limping hard on it, but clearly wants to talk to us.
  • Riley says sup
  • He hears (speaking carefully) that we’re setting out and we intend to follow the raiders.
  • He gets uncomfortable, shifts, thinking hard. He’d like to follow us, but can’t in his condition, so he wants to ask us for a favor.
  • He has a master who was kidnapped in the night, he would like us to try to recover this person.
  • What sort of master?
  • He is apprenticed to a master. He’s a cleric, master is a cleric, sent here for an investigation, don’t ask more. Without his master, the investigation is stalled. He thinks all this is connected.
  • What order?
  • Takes out a symbol of Ishkur.
  • Just been missing since the night.
  • They came here a little more than a week ago.
  • Came from “the circle”
  • What does he look like?
  • Older half-elf, dark hair, thin beard. Prominently wearing a mark of Ishkur.
  • Can’t tell us his name or any specifics.
  • From what we can tell, this guy isn’t sketchy, but definitely uncomfortable. Not scared, it’s like he’s under some rules, skirting the rules to talk to us. Frustrated by it.
  • Riley asks about his thoughts about Gregori.
  • He says, Gregori is a part of their investigation, but not necessarily the person they’re investigating. Quick to tell us that the answers we seek, his master would be permitted to tell us, but he’s already said too much.
  • We can call this guy Adherent.
  • Riley asks about circumstances. The master was kidnapped, didn’t take other priests. They were separated, his master was gone when he got back.
  • Only the two of them.
  • It is known that they were here investigating things.
  • Doesn’t think people in the church would want to stop the investigation.
  • The goblins didn’t seem to want to take Adherent, attack was focused on his master.
  • These two were not normal priests from the city.
  • Haven’t heard anything about other priests being taken.

  • We set out on the King’s Road by horse.
  • Once we get outside the city walls, swing south along the wall. Get to the southwest portion, catch a trail pretty easily, see where lots of smaller trails combine into a big trail going west.
  • Goblins came from many different directions, headed together.
  • Greenwall is dense, but outside the walls is normal nature. A few forests, wide open rolling hills. Doesn’t take us long to get fairly far north.
  • Giant lake, savior’s lake. Can smell it and hear the water.
  • Find the first encampment. Recently were goblins or people or something, but no one there now. Abandoned in a hurry.
  • Riley has a man of the area from Svend, to mark encampments.
  • Enid has our backs, survival-wise.
  • Abandoned in the last 1-3 hours. Large group stationed here. We suppose that this was supposed to be a rear guard to make sure the army wasn’t followed. But no one here.
  • Looks like they scattered.
  • From what we can see, there are tracks going in and out, all seem to be goblins. Doesn’t seem to have been scared by a monster or anything.
  • Riley looks up, it’s a beautiful day.
  • We can see the massive Ashfell statue in the distance, but not the city itself.
  • Getting close to the lake, getting rocky.
  • Known for beach caves and standing stones. Not quite to the beach yet.
  • Eloenn flies around as Reckonth, doesn’t see any goblins, just normal nature.
  • There aren’t weapons in this camp, just random crap.
  • We got past the rear-guard camp, eventually find..first, one dead goblin. Quick examination, killed by another goblins’ weapon. Then more and more dead goblins, then smell smoke on the air.
  • Close to shores of the lake. Trail crest a hill, wanders down parallel to the beach.
  • Reckonth sees that the hill drops down, cave built into it. Camp built into the cave, horseshoe. Large groups of goblins scattering, dead goblins too. Scattering north and south.
  • Seems weird that they’d already be turning on each other.
  • 1/50 goblins is born smarter than the rest, they listen to him. No one tries to kill him and take over. If they stand idle, stupid goblins feel like their leader is weak, will go looking for a new leader. Not bold enough to mutiny.
  • More than two groups of goblins, lots of small teams. Might go in same direction for a while, but then split off. Each group looks like it’s from a different tribe, wearing different things.
  • Doesn’t seem like one group is getting killed more than another, just a melee.
  • No non-goblins that we can see. Each group has its own goblin leader.
  • Either fleeing east or west along the shore, then scatter when they get beyond the hill.
  • We attempt to sneak up to a group, get close, but then another group stumbles upon us.
  • They screech and run away. Big enough to have fought us, but they don’t, immediately start shouting in goblin to scatter.
  • Not going to a particularly place, just scattering out into nature.
  • Still some tribes in the camp, trying to reorganize, chase other goblins out.
  • There isn’t one large trail going out of the camp.
  • This is definitely where the main force was camp. This is where all the stuff from Ashfell would’ve been taken, we’d think. But we don’t see a big pile of stuff. Something happened to make them run away.
  • Eloenn uses food and Reckonth and leads a goblin away.
  • Hypnotism doesn’t work, but Charm Person does.
  • We talk to the goblin whose name is Ick.
  • What’s going on?
  • Big ol’ fight
  • Who’s fighting?
  • Everybody
  • DId something happen to start it?
  • He dunno.
  • Where’s everybody going?
  • Home. Party’s over.
  • Where’s home?
  • You know, wherever you came from
  • Where did you come from?
  • Oh you know, (waves toward the east)
  • Who started the fight?
  • Boss says the party’s over, we ain’t friends no more.
  • Not big boss, his boss
  • Big boss is in the cave
  • How many people?
  • Lots of people
  • Some humans, mostly goblins
  • Some shorties (dwarves)
  • Everyone’s going home from here.
  • How come big boss is stayin’?
  • I dunno.
  • Talking with the humans. They friends?
  • I guess so.
  • Most of the stuff they took is still in the cave
  • Doesn’t think there’s going to big another party again
  • His boss hasn’t said anything about another party.
  • Doesn’t know anything about the humans.
  • Eloenn tells him to forgot that he saw us and go home.
  • He toddles away to go back to what he was doing.
  • Cave entrance is set away from the fighting.
  • Tent of someone important, humans are guarding it.
  • Four guards, not on high alert. Side-eye on the camp belong, making sure no goblins approach the tent.
  • Not something important in the tent, the way they’re acting.
  • Two guards to either side of the entrance, other two are milling about, wandering from cave entrance and back again, talking to each other.
  • Harper turns into a cat to go listen in.
  • Sneaks over there. Hears them talking about what they’ll do after they get paid. Talking like whatever this was is over. Can’t believe it ended when it did and how it did. Dismayed at what they thought was a strong leadership.
  • That’s why you never trust an orc. They don’t make good mercenaries.
  • Tent has rope flaps, closed. Harper sneaks around the outside and gets inside.
  • Inside is a small portable stove, table in the center with maps and documents. In the back, two poles which hold up the tent. Tied to one of them is the half-elf master we’ve been looking for.
  • Harper sneaks back to us, Riley picks him up. Harper turns back into a boy in Riley’s arms. She cradles him gently.
  • He tells about the half-elf and all that he saw.
  • Riley pets Harper’s head, Harper is very happy.
  • From what we can tell from where we are, the cave is the entrance to a whole cave system. Theoretically a lot of people in there.
  • The half-elf looked like he’s been roughed up.
  • We decide to sneak through the back of the tent. Ethan cuts the tent really quietly and we all get inside.
  • The half-elf is surprised to see us, but stays quiet.
  • Riley goes through the documents. There’s a lot of maps of Ashfell, orders written in code. Correspondence back and forth, also in code. One-sided, stuff they’ve received. No names. Riley takes as much as she can.
  • Eloenn cuts the half-elf free and he heals himself.
  • We exit quietly, Eloenn mends the tear in the tent.
  • His name is Iarion. Needs to get into the cave.
  • Your adherent sent us
  • He’s relieved, glad he’s okay.
  • Wouldn’t tell us anything
  • He’s surprised he told us anything.
  • He knows the leader is human, but whenever he was present, he was wearing a mask. Wore very distinctive robes. Something happened recently inside the caves, and they lost control of the goblins.
  • Plain mask, wrapped his mouth in black fabric, masquerade style plain hard mask. Nothing symbolic
  • Took the mercenary companies he purchased and went into the caves to sort out the goblins.
  • Doesn’t know numbers for the goblins, seem limitless. Mercenaries come and go, guesses more than twenty, but doesn’t know.
  • Doesn’t know why he was kidnapped.
  • Sent from the temple of Ishkur to investigate the church. The circle got an edict directly from Ishkur, had stopped hearing from the church in Ashfell, sent him to investigate to see what happened.
  • Hadn’t found anything before he was kidnapped.
  • Riley tells him what happened in the city. Found human who was part of the invasion who was wearing the robes of Ishkur.
  • He frowns, we need to know what’s going one.
  • The leader’s robes are unique, but no identifying marks.
  • He wants to speak to the leader, find out why he was kidnapped.
  • Lead by human, doesn’t know about the orc.
  • The human are bitter toward “an orc” not necessarily the orc we met.
  • Whatever happened in the caves, they’re losing control of their army.
  • Hasn’t seen the boss goblin.
  • He may not be great in a fight, but he can keep up.
  • Harper says he’s the cat that found him. Iarion and Riley pat Harper’s head.
  • No other guards outside the cave entrance specifically. Mouth of the cave is huge.
  • Could slip in without the guards noticing.
  • Eloenn regains some magical power while we talk to Iarion.

  • Upper part of the caves is reinforced. We don’t know if it was a mine or what, but there’s construction inside of it. Carved. Cave entrance seems natural, but beyond, there’s been some work done here to widen the tunnels and make chambers.
  • Find dead bodies, mostly goblins, some mercenaries. When we happen upon goblins (often), they scatter the second they see us, don’t want to fight.
  • Pretty straight shot into the earth, some side rooms though.
  • Not a point of interest on the map we got.
  • Only humans we see are dead.
  • Goblins have been killed by goblin weapons. Mercenaries were also killed by goblin weapons. No goblins seem to have been killed by mercenaries.
  • Seems like one group of goblins turned on all the other goblins and mercenaries.
  • A lot fewer mercenary bodies. Look like they were abruptly overwhelmed.
  • One large tunnel that leads down. Goblins tend to scatter into the side chambers.
  • The goblins are definitely not interested in a fight.
  • There’s sunlight filtering in from above. Deeper down, there are torches. The cave is pretty open at the top, to let sunlight in here and there.
  • We go deeper in, being stealthy. We’re successful enough to cover for those who aren’t as sneaky.
  • Tunnel splits, significant offshoot. Can scout far enough to see a line of goblins guarding the entrance. Have spears, aren’t afraid. Beyond them, we can hear what sounds like a party. Laughing and cheering, sounds like someone has had a victory.
  • No light or sound coming down the main tunnel.
  • Six goblins guarding the entrance, with spears. Decent distance from the party, the tunnel curves.
  • Eloenn and Xan both cast sleep. All the goblins start slumbering.
  • We sneak by the sleeping goblins. We round the corner right into bright light. We immediately find ourselves sliding down a ramp. Eloenn lands on her feet.
  • 60-70 goblins turn to look at us, the party stops.
  • Orc starts laughing his ass off. Sitting on a throne that’s way too small for him. Big fat goblin lays dead at his feet.
  • Brog is hurt, bleeding all over the throne. If he was a human, we’d think he was about to die. Doesn’t seem too concerned, but doesn’t get up.
  • Goblins near to us go for their weapons, but he gives them a look and they stop.
  • Lots of dead goblins, but no humans, living or dead.
  • Straight across from Brog, there’s a large entrance with goblin guards. Would lead back to the main tunnel.
  • Eloenn says hi
  • Riley says, looks like you’re the new big boss huh?
  • Brog kicks the dead goblin, not too hard to be a boss of goblins.
  • Riley nods at his injuries, you had to beat someone for the right.
  • Brog laughs, so do the goblins, none of these guys helped.
  • He gives Odd a nod, glad to see you back on your feet. Odd nods in return.
  • Doesn’t seem to care that we’re here. Doesn’t seem like he wants to fight us.
  • The goblins are all looking between us, unsure.
  • Eloenn asks if we can chat. He gestures to the floor and Harper immediately sits down.
  • Riley thinks he was a mercenary who thinks his human leaders were doing things dishonorably so he took over.
  • He thinks and says yeah, close enough.
  • Doesn’t know too much about the humans who used to lead, wasn’t very high-ranking. They didn’t know much about goblins and he does.
  • Goblins were organized before he joined up.
  • The big boss goblin was just a pet. A good pet, but a pet.
  • At least one human with a lot of resources.
  • Doesn’t know the name or what he looks like.
  • Mercenary captain met with the humans, only ever met with lackeys.
  • Humans are still here in this cave system.
  • He saw the leader fleeing deeper into the caves. Their slaves made this mine. Dwarf slaves. They’ve been nabbing dwarves from across the region for year, digging deep into this cave system to find something.
  • Iarion is hiding behind us.
  • Brog doesn’t know anything about Ishkur, only good god is a dead god.
  • Would he give us leave to hunt the humans down? Yeah, he doesn’t care.
  • Hisses a little, bends forward and paws at the dead goblin, finds a key ring and throws it at us. We’ll need that to free the slaves.
  • A lot of dwarf slaves, dozens.
  • Need help with his wounds? Doesn’t need from our southern gods. Not sure about nature magic, but he says no thanks. If he dies from this, he wasn’t worthy.
  • Riley’s pretty sure he’s proved himself, he’ll pull through.
  • Confidently leads up toward the back of the cave. The goblins split to let us through, and the party starts again once we’re gone.
  • Harper shouts bye and waves at the orc as we leave.

  • We head toward the lower caves, creepier. Widening out more. Farther we go in, find evidence that what was naturally there was reinforced and expanded upon. Deeper in, less natural, more hewn.
  • Harper can tell us that this cave system was once man-made, then was abandoned, hewn out by water, reclaimed by nature. Then it was rediscovered and cleared out again.
  • Eloenn can tell us, cross-referencing Ashfell’s history, that dwarves probably did the clearing out the second time. She doesn’t know what cleared out these caves the first time, nothing she’s ever seen.
  • Darker here, but we’re finding fewer and fewer dead bodies. Echoing screams every so often, but they seem to be coming from above.
  • We’re traveling down through the tunnels, suddenly Xan whips around and meets eyes with goblins we were about to walk past, in a clever side passage. * Curves in on itself. As soon as Xan sees them, they freak out and run.
  • We go down the side-passage. Winds a bit, widens out quickly. Come into the opening of a very large cavern, massive, glowing bright blue with mushrooms.
  • Mushrooms like fields of wheat, floor, walls, and ceiling.
  • Harper and Eloenn can tell us that these are edible, nutritionally dense and glow. Don’t glow once they’re picked. Eloenn knows, historically, it was suspected that goblins grew them underground, what they had for fields instead of wheat or grain or whatever.
  • There’s a broad stone staircase of descends and cuts through the field.
  • They look cultivated. Reckonth confirms that there’s no other goblins in here.
  • Other passage going further down, toward the back.
  • In the back, the mushrooms look like they were harvested. Potentially used to feed slaves.
  • Ethan and Odd are going down first, side-by-side. When they get towards the bottom of the stairs, the stairs click and turn into a ramp. Ethan and Odd are dumped onto the floor on their faces. They take some damage.
  • Behind, in the back, there are two very different types of mushrooms. They let out a puff of smoke, spores. They start coughing.
  • Once we see the trap, there’s a way around it. An outcropping of rock.
  • We can get down safely without being shroomed.
  • Eloenn knows enough to tell us that the weird mushrooms are bad/poisonous, but as long as we stay away, we’ll be fine. Burns lungs a bit, but as long as we get away from it, we’re fine.
  • Harper offers odd and ethan water while asking if they’re okay
  • Harvested mushrooms were taken out and down the other passage.
  • We all take some mushrooms, and Reckonth goes scouting.
  • Passage narrows, then widens again. More of a natural potion of the cave. Unnatural part, floor has been evened out. Reckonth sees that higher up, there are small vents, passages through the walls of the cave. That chamber is also full of bats.
  • Once we reach the bat chamber, there are dead bats that have been brushed off of the path. Not a ton. Ceiling is completely carpeted with bats. Very stinky. Didn’t all die at once.
  • The passage through is kept brushed off and clean. But there are dead things and poop.
  • Eloenn makes some perfume next to her nose. The bats are a little disturbed, but don’t wake up. We sneak through stealthily.
  • At the end of that section of the cave, Ethan notices there is a long spear leaned against the wall toward the entrance to the next chamber. Not dusty or ancient, clearly gets used. Blade is dull.
  • Eloenn investigates it further, no traps. At an angle from the floor, not wedging anything. Pretty unremarkable. Blade is stone. Gets picked up, but we don’t think it was used as a weapon.
  • Riley picks up the spear cause don’t leave a weapon behind. Nothing happens.
  • As we continue on, the floor slopes downward steeply. At the base of the ramp, there’s an arc. A curtain is hanging across the passage, heavily leather strips about the width of a hand. Attached to the ceiling, long enough to hang on the ground. Several layers, can’t see through it. Leather stitched together.
  • Riley parts the curtain with her spear. The second she does, a wash of cold air hits the party, and the smell of old blood.
  • Puddles of old dried blood on the floor. Animal carcasses hanging from chains.
  • Riley holds the curtain open with the spear and we go in. Eloenn holds the curtain with mage hand so Riley can get through.
  • Natural cold. Kinda chilly. Older meat has gone bad. Local animals, goats, deer, antelope, maybe a bear.
  • The entrance out drops suddenly so the cold doesn’t get out. Curves very suddenly, more endless cave.
  • Travel a while before we hear voices down a side passage. Head that way, and get to a door. As we approach it, we see a face peek through the bars.
  • “You don’t look like goblins.”
  • Dwarven face, speaking Common.
  • “Do you have a key”
  • Riley pulls out the key ring, starts trying keys on the door. Asks questions.
  • Used to have 250 dwarves, now 200. Don’t know how long, he’s been here around 6 months.
  • What’re they doing down here?
  • Mining. He doesn’t know for what though, there’s no ore.
  • Goblins brought them here, knows there’s a human ringleader.
  • Harper seems a bit uneasy here. doesn’t like the locked doors or that people are being kept here. Ethan gives harper a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder.
  • Tells us to talk to another dwarf about specifics.
  • The 50 dwarves just died over time.
  • Massive chamber inside, all 200 hundred dwarves are here.
  • After the commotion and the dumbass ran through, they snapped their chains but couldn’t get through this door.
  • He gets frustrated, give me the keys, go talk to specific dwarf. Derimbor.
  • Sitting on a chair on top of a table.
  • Each dwarf is shackled to two other dwarves. Small chain gangs.
  • Let Derimbor go first and he hops down. Older but still spry.
  • Basically a barracks. Long tables with mushrooms chopped up and cooked.
  • Barrels of mead.
  • Obviously trapped here.
  • As they get let go, they get up and run out the door. Riley tells them what to expect as they leave. Avoid the party, be careful leaving the cave.
  • Derimbor says that the human that’s been bossing them around rushed through with some mercenaries and headed down into the warrens.
  • The boss wears a mask and is seems under pressure from someone else. Keeps coming down to ask for progress. Derimbor is unsure what’s down there, but he hears the masked man tell someone else a great enemy of Ivar is buried here. No gold or ore or other valuables down there.
  • The masked man is still down here.
  • Riley tells him about the orc and the raid on the city. He seems confused, doesn’t make any sense. As far as he knew, this had nothing to do with the city. They were just here to dig.
  • They brought back supplies from the city, but he hasn’t seen any here.
  • Five or six mercenaries were with him.
  • Once they get all the dwarves, they’ll head to Ashfell.
  • Derimbor has been down here for about two years, he guesses. Some have been here longer, longest is about five.
  • Goblins have been going around, capturing caravans and traveling merchant groups, killing everyone, selling dwarves to this guy.
  • As far as he can tell, it only happens outside the city.
  • The dwarves come from all over the place. Some from as far away as Two Rivers.
  • Riley tells him that they need to tell the guard captain and the mayor what is going on. We write him a letter to take, Eloenn stamps it with her signet ring.
  • He warns us that they only recently broke through. Digging through solid stone for years. Within the last month, broke through to another cave system, far more ancient than this one. Doesn’t know what’s going on down in that deepest part. Those groups don’t tend to come back. They found something and it’s nothing good.
  • He’ll worry about us, we shouldn’t worry about him.
  • As we go down, it’s exactly as Derimbor described. Fresh-hewn stone everywhere. Two huge chambers to fill with the rock they’ve dug out. Straight tunnel that angles straight down into the earth. Up above, we can see a walkway, don’t know how you’d get up there. Group of humans rushing across that walkway, one wearing a mask.
  • Iarion recognizes him.
  • Walkway is twenty-thirty feet up.
  • Harper casts Entangle. The vines catch him and he falls. He’s struggling, his mask falls off. We don’t recognize him, but he has salt-n-pepper hair. Iarion shouts out “you!”
  • Eloenn uses Reckonth to get a really good look at his face.
  • The party starts attacking the mercenaries. Ethan shoots a merc in the face and he falls off the catwalk.
  • Eloenn shoots a ray of frost and a merc falls to his knees shivering.
  • Four left, plus the masked man.
  • They let loose with arrows, none of them hit us. Another one drops down, helps the masked man free himself from the vines. Pushes him, and they start hurrying across the walkway, fighting off the vines, trying to get a entrance we don’t know where it goes.
  • Eloenn casts ray of frost at the masked man, slowing him further.
  • Harper takes down another merc, and Xan kills the last one with fire.
  • The leader continues to hobble away.
  • Xan tries to put him to sleep, fails. Eloenn tries too, almost gets him, but he shrugs it off.
  • Harper casts another round of entangle. He’s in the process when he feels the spell dissolve. The man has cast a spell to counteract Harper’s spell.
  • Riley shoots a final arrow, but misses.

  • Where he’s running slopes down like our path does. We continue downward.
  • We get to a creepy and unpleasant place. Completely unlike the cave from above. Purely natural cave system, but not like the natural parts of the caves above.
  • Can barely see, even with darkvision. It’s stiflingly hot.
  • Dust particles or something floating in the air, always on the edges of our vision.
  • As we continue, we keep seeing movement ahead of us. Hear the scuff of boots and heavy breathing.
  • As we follow deeper and deeper, the sounds get more distant until it’s completely silent.
  • After a few seconds, we hear something echoing. It’s whispers in the dark, echoing everywhere.
  • Amongst all the whispers, Lyulf hears “kinsman” in a language he hasn’t heard in a long time. Coming from a very specific direction. Lyulf calls out. It doesn’t answer. But he’s sure it’s in that direction.
  • Lyulf heads in the direction and we all follow. The passage continues to get tighter and closer and more uncomfortable. The air is getting thicker. The whispers get more insistent.
  • Very suddenly, the cleric stops everyone, quietly. Touching our shoulders. He points at the wall. There’s a very old carving there. It takes a moment to realize that it’s writing.
  • Eloenn can’t translate the whole thing, even with her notes. She’s reminded of stories of elves exiled to live underground. Elven language that isn’t supposed to exist. It’s a warning. “You can’t hurt them, they never die, turn back, seal the cave.”
  • Eloenn copies the message into her notes.
  • The cleric whispers fiercely that we should leave. He feels something down here like he’s never felt before. Never felt more distant from his god.
  • Eloenn casts detect magic as a ritual. Everything around us is magical, tends toward necromancy. Dust in the air especially makes her think necromancy.
  • We turn around and see a guy holding a torch. The torch seems like a sentient creature, dancing at the end of a scepter. Odd feels like this is a long-lost uncle in the worst way.
  • He points at us, and two dark shapes appear and start toward us.
  • The guy is following behind his dark shapes.
  • The cleric can’t speak, he’s shaking in fear. Moving away and pulling us with him.
  • Herding us deeper into the cave.
  • As they loom nearer, the cleric yells at us to run and turns to run deeper into the cave.
  • The man is very solid, reminds us of Odd but more twisted.
  • He looks bemused.
  • Lyulf is at the back of the party, covering us as we all retreat. He has his weapon drawn.
  • The man raises a hand and Lyulf’s weapons glow red. The wood catches fire.
  • This area that we’re in is a tunnel, narrow passageway. Shoulder-to-shoulder, two people could fit through hugging each other.
  • The cleric and Xan run off down the left passage, and the rest of us run down the right passage.
  • As Lyulf’s group is hurrying down the tunnel, he’s trailing behind. Suddenly the group gives out. Falls into a chamber below, hits the ground. Hears the whispers again, “kinsman.” Around a corner, he glimpses a grey wolf running from one side to the other.
  • Lyulf calls out to us to come that direction, but his voice echoes. Something is closing in on us, we think. Many branching tunnels, endless. Can’t see the hole Lyulf fell down. Lyulf just sees darkness.
  • Lyulf lights a torch, it pushes back the darkness a bit. As he’s hurrying, he keeps hearing “kinsmen,” a harsh whisper, leading him in certain directions. Grey wolf, black wolf. At the far end of a tunnel, he sees another of the evil creatures that summon two back figures. The whispers say “RUN.” This keeps happening, eventually hits a dead end. The whisper is right on top of him. As he turns, he sees an old ancient corpse, looks like one of the evil creatures. Mostly bones. Two axes across its throat, used to pin it to the wall. Below it, just bones. Very large, Lyulf can tell it was a Norn. The weapon in the wall, the blades are made from stone. The stone blades are held by two wolf skulls.
The whispers are insistent around him, “kinsmen, kinsmen, kinsmen,” wanting him to pick up the weapons.
  • Lyulf grabs the axes. The chamber is getting brighter, things are gathering around him. Lyulf rages out. The second he touches them, they’re just as angry as he is. He turns around, the creatures are already dying. Their ribs are caving in, Lyulf alone has the ability to stand up against them.
  • Lyulf charges them.
  • Xan turns a corner and find themself face to face with one of these evil creatures. It holds its staff up. Some kind of little creature made of flame is at the end. Evil, wants to kill them.
  • Lyulf appears behind it and buries his axes in its back. It doesn’t scream but it opens its mouth like it wants to. The flame creature leaps at the guy holding it and Lyulf and Xan are free to escape.
  • The rest of us hear a screech in a specific direction. We run away from it.
  • Xan is able to somehow, amist the chaos of the whispers and footfalls, they’re able to hone in on the footfalls. To the cleric and Lyulf, it seems like Xan is picking a random direction and booking it, but they follow.
  • Run into another creature with a staff. He holds it up. Lyulf feels the stone of his weapon is hot, but it’s not metal so it doesn’t affect them.
  • Lyulf swings his axes, taking his head clean off. The creature opens his mouth to scream, but there’s no noise.
  • The rest of the party hears screaming and screeching echoing along the halls.
  • Xan runs directly into Riley and Ethan. We’re all reunited.
  • Lyulf sees both wolves, silver and black, running side by side down a specific tunnel. He points and yells, directing the party to go down that tunnel.
  • If anyone glances over their shoulder, the tielfings are appearing from side passages, following but not running. Calmly following after us. Each time we think there couldn’t be more, another one turns the corner. Their shadowy bodyguards emerge from the darkness as well.
  • Somehow, Lyulf manages to lead us back to the tunnel that first took us down here. The cleric immediately starts drawing something on the wall. He tells us to keep going, not to wait for him.
  • Lyulf and Riley stay to protect him. He finishes, says “you don’t want to be here for this.” He takes the spear from Riley, tells them to go.
  • He’s going to protect the world from these creatures.
  • He’s very insistent, there’s no time to answer questions.
  • Lyulf and Riley move away, the cleric moves deeper in. Smacks the end of the spear into the rune. It explodes, rocks start tumbling into the tunnel. Yells that the masked man is Gregori’s second. Then is either trapped in there or crushed by falling rocks.
  • Can’t hear him, he can’t us. The cleric is completely separated from us.
  • We head out of the caves. We warn the orc and the goblins.
  • “What the hell were you doing down there?”
  • The idiot humans were digging for demons. The orc stares, then laughs. Of course they were.
  • The dwarves have been steadily filtering out, telling him similar stuff about how dangerous it is.
  • The goblins start saying the same thing now that the dwarves started saying that.
  • Stupid humans, everyone knows that. Creepy whispers.
  • Brog says that he thought the caves would make a good staging point, but maybe not so much.
  • He thinks he’ll bury the underground passages more, then find somewhere else to hunker down.
  • Hasn’t decided what he wants to do with his army of goblins yet, hasn’t thought that far ahead.
  • Riley says good luck, godspeed.
  • All the dwarves have gotten out.
  • We don’t find the supplies, but Brog gives a sly smile. Some of them went this way, some of them went that way. Brog’s clan won out the majority of it, he’s not offering.
  • Riley asks how they got through the greenwall. Brog pauses and frowns. That wasn’t us, your masked friend did that.
  • He doesn’t know how it was done, he wouldn’t do it again.
  • He thinks Ashfell is too weak for what they did to it. It wasn’t a sporting attack, it was bullying.
  • He won’t be doing it again.
  • However this happened, it fell apart. They don’t have the capacity to do it again. As far as we know, the masked man is still down with the demons.
  • When we get outside, the fighting is mostly done. The clans that weren’t going to follow Brog have cleared out. The mercenaries that were guarding the tent are gone. The few goblins left are looting.

  • We collect our horses and head back to Ashfell, taking the King’s Road.
  • In Oldtown, we hear bells ringing. First impression is yay, they’re happy we’re back. But as we’re riding through Oldtown, everything is closed up, people are going to the churches. When we get to the garrison, the dwarves that we freed are camped in the courtyard.
  • Daggart hurries over, he’s pale, shaken up. Tells us immediately that Svend is dead.

Second Session
10/2/16
  • During the interrogation, Eloenn takes a breather to regain some of her magical power
  • Goblins have breached the garrison!
  • It’s in a uproar, everyone’s running around
  • We run, following Daggart, heading toward courtyard
  • Lots of conflicting information, numbers, where they’re coming from
  • As we’re running, people are giving Daggart reports
  • By the time we get to the courtyard, he has his information
  • Not too many goblins, hasn’t been overrun
  • Small pockets of goblins, getting slaughtered
  • Best estimation, probe got out of hand
  • Rushed in farther than they were supposed to
  • His guess is one of the sallyports
  • Send us to one of them to secure it, send a team to the other one
  • If we find the breach, just hold it, find a way to barricade the door
  • Sallyport – door that wraps around to attack battering rams
  • Designed to be a tight fit, can’t invade, but can let in a steady stream of goblins, which isn’t good
  • Not an effective escape route for us either
  • Can’t evacuate garrison through there
  • Sallyports haven’t ever had to be used in Daggart’s memory
  • Build when there was one wall around the city
  • Doesn’t believe goblins could build an effective battering ram
  • Taking Daggart’s directions, we go down a specific hallway, very narrow
  • As we head down there, team of goblins run out, but right into a group of guards who slaughter them
  • Hear lots of screaming and shouting, but don’t see big groups of goblins, very scattered
  • At end of hallway, see torchlight from guardroom
  • Inside of sallyport has a guardroom, to gather people to go out
  • Usually would have standing guards, but there aren’t any there right now
  • There are goblins ahead of us, in the guardroom or heading toward it
  • Can go in slowly and take the hallway, blocking the goblins, would probably not immediately get attacked
  • Or rush into guardroom and hold that instead, can spread out, hold room ahead of us
Enid, Odd, Riley, and Lyulf all start rushing in. Harper is more hesitant. Eloenn follows, staying back. Reckonth flies in as well.
  • Rushing into the ready room.
  • The goblin were not in the ready room yet, coming in from the sallyport. Being ordered by a human. Also have a large, four-legged animal, very ugly and covered in scars.
  • We rush into a hail of slingshot bullets, all take damage
  • The goblins are jammed into the hallway, and are at an disadvantage
  • We all attack, most with physical weapons, Eloenn with ray of frost
  • These goblins are tougher, but we take out two, and injure the beast
  • Riley almost broke the string on her bow, but turned it into a trick shot somehow
  • The beast tries to attack Odd, but he fends it off his shield. Also tries to protect Lyulf.
  • Goblin swings at Lyulf, fails miserably.
  • The human in the back casts a spell, healing the beast.
  • Odd blocks another shot
  • We all attack again, Xan lands a hit thanks to Reckonth’s distracting swoop
  • Eloenn casts mage armor on herself
  • We take down everything except the human, who attempts to run
  • Harper summons grasping vines and weeds, which slows him somewhat, but he’s still going
  • Enid springs after him, Lyulf goes charging to tackle him
  • Enid hits him the knee, Lyulf knocks him to the ground
  • The human whips out a dagger, tries to cut his own throat, but Lyulf is too quick and pins him arm, disarming him
  • Odd passes Lyulf his manacles
  • The door to the sallyport is shattered, but Eloenn sets about mending it. It takes five minutes.
  • Enid and Riley go scouting
  • Xan heals Eloenn, which she very much appreciates
  • Down the sallyport hallway, turns ninety degrees, another shattered door, that’s the door to the outside
  • Riley starts lugging boxes and furniture into the hallway, to clog it up. Enid tries to help, but is less effective
  • Not long after we finish our preparations, we hear panicked voices coming from the other hallway into the room, from inside the garrison
  • Mercenary leading more goblins, trying to escape
  • They rush toward us and we attack
  • We take out an archer, a few goblins, and get a few good hits on the mercenary
  • The mercenary swings at Lyulf, but fails because of Odd’s excellent protection
  • Enid dodges an arrow, but a second arrow hits Odd
  • Harper heals Odd
  • Reckonth helps Lyulf murder the mercenary
  • Odd takes out a goblin
  • Enid takes out another goblin, and an archer
  • The final archer falls to our attacks as well.
  • The human we captured is named Spades Slick.
  • As we’re trying to decide what to do, we hear soldiers coming to help hold the room.
  • We escort the prisoner back to Daggart
  • Chain him to the chair next to the goblin
  • Daggart yells questions on the prisoner, but he doesn’t answer
  • Riley asks the goblin if he has anything else to say
  • The goblin sneers and says he’s not talking to us, Daggart punches him right in the teeth
  • This goes on for a while, but the human is not talking.
  • Lyulf tries to be intimidating, with middling success. He looms in the background
  • Riley however, is extremely intimidating
  • Odd shuffles away from her
  • Riley starts telling the prisoner all the horrible things that would happen if he doesn’t talk
  • The prisoner realizes we’re not guards, and decides to talk
  • Who’s he working for?
  • They’d do much worse things than you can
  • What’re you trying to accomplish with all this?
  • Will you let me go if I tell you?
  • If we let you go, the people you work for are going to kill you. We can protect you.
  • He scoffs, they’re everywhere. Soon they’ll be running this city, you’re not in any position to protect me
  • “They” as in an organization.
  • He’s wearing tattered robes, being deliberately obscuring who he is and where he came from. Generic traveler. Pointedly not wearing anything identifying, simple weapons, old clothing, piecemeal. Generic voice. Trying to conceal who he is. Can cast healing spells.
  • He was calling on a deity to cast the spell, but we didn’t catch which one.
  • Name of organization and goals?
  • Scoffing and sneering and rolling his eyes. Why now are you trying to fix things? It’s too late, let someone else try to save this place from itself. Annoyed and frustrated. This is a place of sin, needs a holy cleansing.
  • What sins are they trying to cleanse?
  • If you don’t see it, then you’re part of it.
  • Riley tries to sound sympathetic, what is their vision for the city?
  • Prisoner is so aggressive with his beliefs, mindset is one of “you are part of the problem, no point in talking to you”
  • Eloenn tries to bluff him, saying how beautiful the city is, she doesn’t know what he’s talking about with the sin, tries to provoke him, but she’s super duper obvious and he doesn’t say a word.
  • Riley says she’ll tell his people that he defected, that he’s spilling his guts, but he doesn’t buy it.
  • Xan pulls off his hood triumphantly, he has scraggly hair. Daggart, the guy, and the goblin all give them weird looks
  • Door bursts open, assistant rushes in. We follow Daggart out, guards watch the prisoners.
  • As we’re walking, assistant is giving report that the goblins have surrounded the granary, starting fires to burn it down. Very not good.
  • There are farms outside Ashfell, but in order for them to import food, they use the King’s Road. All the food is in the granary.
  • Heading toward late summer now.
  • Granary tends to supply the rich people first, if the rich don’t get food, the poor won’t get food either.
  • Over the ramparts, the granary is toward the north-east.
  • Daggart cusses, turns to us, asks us to go out again.
  • Riley asks where the nearest water source is.
  • Daggart says, the waterway that the aqueduct feeds. Turned off.
  • The granary hasn’t really caught fire yet, we can stop them if we’re quick.
  • Eloenn asks about healing potions, Daggart will try to scrounge some up for when we get back.
  • Daggart says capturing another prisoner could be helpful.

  • We head out through the aqueduct again. Not difficult, takes us close to the granary.
  • Can see there are a number of goblins surrounding it, with torches. Setting the torches to hay.
  • We all take a look, Eloenn can see very well through Reckonth.
  • Xan gets the impression that the goblins are starting small tiny fires, mostly for show. A fair distance from the granary itself.
  • Eloenn can tell with Reckonth, that there are goblins moving in and out of the granary. Not taking food though. Might be trying to poison or contaminate the food.
  • Bottom floor of granary has windows, but they’re covered. Wide, three-story warehouse.
  • Goblins outside are pretty spread out, groups of two or three. Can probably sneak past them.
  • We manage to get through the doorway sneakily. Crack the door open and sneak in one-by-one. Dark inside, full of boxes stacked high. Sacks of flour.
  • Enid and Harper notice that this is an ambush, there are goblins in the lofts.
  • They only have a moment to warn us before the goblins launch their assault.
  • We all take damage, Eloenn is very injured.
  • They hop down to fight us
  • Eloenn immediately casts sleep, five goblins fall unconscious
  • The rest of the party attacks, Reckonth swooping at Riley’s target to help her hit.
  • Enid and Odd take down one goblin, an archer goes down too.
  • The goblins attack, both fail.
  • The team takes out of the rest of the goblins.
  • Enid goes scouting
  • The team kills all the sleeping goblins except the one that looks like a leader.
  • Eloenn sits on a box and cleans her clothes with magic.
  • We take the leader back.
  • Enid carries back some arrows, Lyulf brings some bags of flour.
  • We head out of the warehouse, approach the fires. The goblins tending them scream and run away, and we put out the fires.

  • We arrive back at the garrison.
  • Daggart is very excited, the hostage is extremely confused.
  • Tie the goblin to a chair, in a closet.
  • Xan peeks her head in, whispers “all your friends are dead.”
  • Daggart rustled up some healing potions to get us all back up to full.
  • Riley interrogates the goblin, the humans are getting you in trouble, you should rat them out
  • The goblin very much agrees
  • I didn’t want to but the human told us that we had to make a big show, we didn’t want to burn the barn, the human made us, shouldn’t have listened to that human, humans are no good.
  • What did the human look like?
  • Tall, kinda pink, ugly, kinda mean, dumb pink face, tiny nose, little ears.
  • Riley thanks him.
  • Goblin scoots forward, smiling, I was helpful!
  • Riley asks about hair color, he starts listing colors, trying to gauge her reaction. She pats his head.
  • Eloenn asks about the name of the organization, but the word “organization” is too big. Eloenn starts listing “group, clubs, tribe,” thesaurus-style, the goblin goes a little slack-jawed.
  • He doesn’t know whether or not he recognizes the symbol of Ishkur.
  • Daggart left during the interrogation, shaking his head. He’s up on the ramparts.
  • Catarina is in the make-shift medic area, fixing things and making potions.
  • The governor is on the ramparts with Daggart.
  • Riley goes to see him. Eloenn and others follow.
  • Svend is there with Daggart and Gregori. In an argument. Daggart and Svend vs. Gregori.
  • All turn to look at us.
  • Gregori gestures at us: they’ve proven they can do it, they’re the only people who can, they have to go.
  • Daggart shakes his head and walks away
  • Svend is trying to call Gregori down.
  • Gregori rushes at us, you have to help the church.
  • Riley: calm down, what’s going on
  • They’re going to burn down the Church of Ivar
  • Svend interjects, you don’t know that
  • Gregori says his brother is in there
  • Eloenn gets sassy for a moment, flushes, turns away.
  • She sends Reckonth out, doesn’t have to fly far. There are two churches, one is dark and empty, nothing going on. Other side, there are goblin working very hard to get inside. Throwing torches, singing and dancing around, bringing burnable stuff toward the building. * Building is mostly stone, wood and stone.
  • Riley asks Gregori how he knows the church is in trouble.
  • He sighs, I’ve prayed on it, I know my brother, none of his people are here. Must have boarded up the church, protect people inside.
  • How do you know he’s in danger
  • I can just feel it
  • Eloenn comes back, they’re definitely in danger
  • Not for show this time. This is an aggressive action, trying to get to the people inside.
  • Riley says she’ll go
  • Svend gets exasperated, they already ambushed you once
  • Riley doesn’t care
  • Dozens of people in the church
  • Riley: we’re not going to leave people to burn in the church
  • Svend tells Daggart to get potions for us, can’t repay us for doing this, come back safe
  • A LOT of goblins, not as many as surround the garrison, but it’s definitely a concentrated attack.
  • When the attack started, there weren’t services in the Ishkur church, there were services going on in the Ivar church.
  • Gregori is frustrated at Lyulf’s accusation that he ran to safety while his brother stayed
  • Lyulf: sounds like your brother has faith
  • Gregori: more faith than me
  • We head out to save the church. Gregori and Svend stay on the ramparts.
  • Daggart walks with us, assistant gets potions
  • He didn’t think Gregori was capable of that level of concern for his brother, they haven’t talked in years.
  • Daggart seems relieved, that guy does have a soul, that’s good.
  • Before Levi (the brother) was the high priest of Ivar, he was just a page. Gregori was first in line to be high priest of Ivar. He switched religions. Still cares about his brother
  • Riley asks if he trusts Gregori.
  • Daggart blinks. Yeah, of course.
  • Daggart recommends, with a force that size, don’t engage it directly. Worked-up goblins have no focus, point them at something, and they go. They go in formation, don’t be in front of the formation.
  • This is probably the last time we can use the aqueduct, we’ll turn the water back on after you get back with the people.
  • If they had another target, we could refocus the goblins’ attention, but he doesn’t know why they’re targeting the church.
  • Would only be distracted by another large force, but we don’t want to risk it.
  • Two doors and a bunch of windows into the church.
  • Have to assess things when we arrive.
  • Riley shakes his hand, hopefully we’ll be back soon with more people
  • Daggart says godspeed, thank you for doing this, not sure even if he could go out with a team, don’t know if they’d have the guts. Admiring what we’re doing but don’t think we will succeed.
  • Each get one potion that’ll get us to full health

  • Leave through the aqueduct, get to the church.
  • There’s a large group of goblin at the front, fashioning a battering ram out of junk they’ve found. Strapping it around, clever but terrifying. It will work when they finish
  • Group B is the roving horde, running in large wide circle around the church, screaming, being psychos. Three humans are trying to wrangle them.
  • Group C is gathering material around the back, large but high windows, two large fires, funneling smoke into the building. Bottom of the building is stone, been there forever, has been built on with wood. Smoke is a problem, trying to smoke them out, not super effective.
  • Group B is throwing torches through the windows, the windows are very high and narrow
  • Door in the back is smaller and fortified.
  • Fires are to either side of the door. Door area is concealed in smoke.
  • Area around group A is very open, approach would be seen.
  • Eloenn gets out some paper, waits for Riley to dictate a message.
  • Help is here, we’re going to clear out the goblins in the back, clear the back door, we’ll knock three times.
  • Eloenn rolls up the message and Reckonth takes it inside
  • Wide open church, altar in the middle, everyone is gathered towards the altar. The smoke is making them shrink toward Group A, but when group A makes noise, they move toward Group C. Huddling tighter in the center
  • One human right next to the altar, in finer robes, he’s trying to calm people down.
  • Owl lands on the altar, priest reads the note.
  • He yells out that help is coming, they’re here.
  • Group A is getting close to being able to break through.
  • The note is on fancy stationary.
  • Because of the smoke, we can attack by surprise.
  • Take out the humans and most of the goblins. Reckonth helps Xan hit.
  • Harper is slashed at by a goblin.
  • Harper takes revenge, Enid kills the last goblin.
  • Riley knocks three times, eventually they unbar and open the door.
  • Eloenn clears out some smoke when wind magic.
  • The people are staring at us and each other, not moving. Huddling up
  • Riley heads to Levi. He opens his mouth, but there’s a big bang from the front door.
  • Everyone’s nervous to go outside, but Eloenn leads the way to show it’s safe. Levi insists as well, and everyone starts to move.
  • 30ish people.
  • Because Group A is attacking the door, Group B got excited and is at the front as well. We escape!
  • Riley’s tactic worked beautifully.

  • Get back into the garrison. The aqueduct water is turned back on behind us.
  • Get back up to the ramparts. Svend starts hugging us. Gregori nods distantly to his brother. They share a look.
  • Ilsevel is there, she’s been running things on the ground. Helping with the injured, organizing defenses. Things have calmed down a bit, so she’s up on the ramparts.
  • Harper hugs Odd
  • Ilsevel and Daggart looking down from the ramparts, shoulders slumped.
  • Goblins have set up a ring of torches. A big orc stands in the middle. A bunch of dead humans are lying around in their robes.
  • Some other humans pushed back with the merc
  • Goblins are not longer listening to the humans
  • Callum’s mom is down there, and his dad, and a few others, lined up on their knees, with knives at their throats. They’ve been roughed up
  • Orc starts yelling that he’s now in command, tired of the dishonorable ways of the people he’s been working for. He’s challenging us to a duel. He feels this is a dishonorable invasion, only way to make it right is for there to be one decent honorable battle.
  • Choose a champion, send them out, bless this. If you agree, he will release the prisoners, everyone except Callum’s mom. Once the duel is concluded, she will be released
  • If you prove yourselves dishonorable, he’ll have the prisoners killed. If you refuse, he’ll also have the prisoners killed.
  • Ilsevel turns to Daggart, says she’ll go. He says no, you only have one arm
  • Odd says “it has to be me,” corrects himself, “I volunteer.”
  • Daggart says you have no obligation, you’ll probably die.
  • Even from this distance, can tell that the orc is very big. Not as tall as Lyulf, but outweighs him.
  • Daggart yells down that we accept your challenge, we’ll send our champion.
  • We can go down, but we should stay back.
  • Lyulf is following Odd to the ring.
  • Xan goes too.
  • Harper looks terrified, but goes too.
  • Eloenn goes down too, tells Odd in Infernal that he’s a good warrior and she believes in him. Odd freaks out, awkwardly says goodbye.
  • All but one prisoner has been let go.
  • We have to stay back or the woman dies.
  • Reckonth circles above, watching for funny business.
  • The orc swings at Odd once he’s in the ring, gets a really good hit. Orc nods at Odd’s potion, lets him drink it.
  • Odd does, then takes his own swing, slashing at the orc for a bit of damage.
  • Orc is not wearing much, but has orcish armor, crude forged. He doesn’t really try to stop Odd from hitting him.
  • Orc swings again, and Odd hits the ground unconscious.
  • Goblins start cheering. A goblin raises a sword at Eloise, but the orc throws a hand axe and kills him.
  • Yells at his side to settle down, let the lady go, we’re leaving. Nods at Lyulf.
  • His name is Brog. Lyulf hopes to see him on the battlefield in the future.
  • Harper and Riley rush to help Odd. Harper and Xan try to stabilize him. We save him without too much trouble.
  • Dent in his armor, the blow crushed his ribs.
  • After a long moment, the gates open and guards flood out, forming a perimeter.
  • Medics rush out.
  • Daggart and Ilsevel get there soon after. You’ve done it, you’ve saved the city, they’re gone. * However they came in, they’re gone.
  • Odd does not look relieved. Harper is crying on him.
  • We all level up to level 2!
  • Seemed to leave under the streets. Sewers, underground tunnels.

First Session
9/25/16
  • We find ourselves in The Customs House. It’s heading toward the late part of early evening, we’ll be leaving early the next morning. Prep for the caravan is still going on. Some of the prep people don’t expect to sleep, working throughout the night.
  • Us paying customers will sleep.
  • Drawn to the common room cause there’s a commotion, no one in there
  • Gather around windows
  • Shouting and noise, something exciting going on outside
  • Window shatters, lit torch goes onto the floor
  • Stomp it out
  • Large groups of goblins outside on the city streets, running amuck
  • They’re yelling
  • Surreal for us, goblins have never been in oldtown
  • Travel in small armies
  • Angry little guys
  • Survive by sticking together in army troupes
  • Handful could get into the city, but they don’t travel in groups that small usually
  • Army-sized group is here now, how did they make it in here?
  • Seems impossible
  • Riley is not pleased about this attack
  • They’re panicking, through this would be a lot easier
  • The buildings aren’t really catching fire, only small fires
  • Goblins are scattering
  • Shouts and screams all over the city
  • Booker, bartender, suggests that normal caravan guards can hold the bar and the surrounding around
  • Rest of us should get out there
  • He wants to keep the bar standing
  • Doesn’t know how many are out there.
  • Everyone jumps out windows, Eloenn takes the door
  • We’re a large enough group, once we get into street, the goblins scatter
  • They all run in chaotic directions
  • Morale is broken instantly
  • Favoring northwesterly direction
  • Possibly plan on regrouping in that direction
  • As we pursue them, shouts all over the city
  • Northeast, horizon is much brighter
  • Not too bad around us, smoke is rising but not too much fire
  • As we’re marching through, a group of people rushes out in front of us, turns with weapons drawn toward the thing chasing them
  • It’s goblins
  • Ilsevel shows up, she’s protecting three human children, they’re behind her
  • Metal arm is damaged, with a spear through it
  • Fighting with her other hand
  • Otherwise fine
  • Kids are scared, but fine
  • Goblins throw themselves into formation
  • Shields as tall as they are, spears
  • One in the back with a bow
  • Xan misses with fire
  • Reckonth bothers the archer, Riley shoots him with a bow, kills him
  • Eloenn creates some sparks in a goblin’s face, Harper kills him with his quarterstaff
  • Odd misses with his longsword
  • Harper tells Odd it was a good effort
  • Enid attacks, kungfu’s the goblin’s head off
  • Odd now has a fear of catgirls
  • Lyulf attacks with his greatsword, cuts the shield and the goblin in half
  • Goblins are all dead
  • Eloenn is looking a little pale, hugs her owl
  • Once the goblins are dead, Ilsevel steps forward, commends us.
  • Odd salutes
  • She seems a little surprised and disappointed that Eloenn’s here
  • Riley nods politely
  • “We need to get these children to the garrison”
  • Harper salutes cause Odd did
  • Getting people to the garrison as quickly as she can
  • Goblins are closing in on the fort
  • People are trying to fortify
  • Ilsevel conscripts us to get the kids into the garrison
  • We need to get in there too
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth up to count goblins
  • In the immediate area, four teams of goblins in the surrounding streets
  • More goblins every time I look, dozens and dozens
  • Fort is to the northwest
  • Relay this info to mom
  • Kids are young and slow
  • Ilsevel can carry one
  • They’re kinda scared of Lyulf
  • Odd doesn’t want to touch them
  • Harper and Ethan each carry one
  • They stay towards the back to keep the kids out of danger
  • Ilsevel can help guide us, suggests we avoid conflict
  • Oldtown is a horrible rat’s nest of wooden structures built on top of stone structures
  • Eloenn helps steer us away from big groups with her view through Reckonth
  • She holds onto Xan’s shirt
  • Odd leads us through back alleys
  • We try to move stealthily, but it’s rather uneffective
  • Large group, six goblin soldiers, and a human telling them what to do, pointing at buildings and at the torches
  • We’re just sneaky enough to huddle down until we pass
  • Because of Odd’s knowledge of backstreets, we avoid every other group handily

  • Soon enough, we see the garrison
  • Close to the outermost wall of Oldtown
  • Build into the wall – garrison
  • Structure reaches out of the wall, castle built into the wall
  • Large groups of goblins gathering around gate into the garrison
  • Soldiers on parapet, shooting down to keep the goblins at bay
  • With Odd’s help, we sneak past the goblins and into the garrison. They bar the doors immediately after we get inside
  • Goblins start closing in, we’re the last people to get inside
  • Ilsevel takes the kids, hands them to a guard
  • Shouts orders, points at us and leads us up to the parapets
  • Meet two people in charge, Svend, governor of Oldtown. Also dwarf boss of guards, Daggart
  • Looking out over city, trying to plan what to do
  • Ilsevel demands their attention, gives them her report
  • Odd salutes, stands at attention
  • They ask us for our information, don’t know what happened
  • Governor is stressed
  • “We don’t know how long this is going to go on, did we lose the city?”
  • Occupied, or just a raid?
  • Daggart perks up when Eloenn mentions a human
  • Light blue robes, average build, thick heavy robes
  • Little too hefty to be an elf
  • Movement made us think he’s older
  • Riley mentions that the goblins thought this would be easier
  • Human with Daggart takes notes
  • Seems like Daggart isn’t listening, just staring dead-eyed
  • When she trails off, he springs into action again, what she says makes sense
  • Lyulf checks for his wife and daughter in the garrison, they aren’t there
  • Rain season, goblins don’t understand that the wood is old and wet
  • Goblins are forcing everyone to barricade themselves in their homes
  • Haven’t been able to move anyone into the city safely, to stop the fires
  • Lyulf looks to see which wall he can jump over safely, but it’s very tall
  • Goblins are wary of the arrows, archers shooting down at them
  • Archers are running out of arrows
  • Not prepared for an army of this size
  • Whole structure is stone
  • Tall, with one gate. Built into the wall
  • Goblins don’t seem to be trying to climb
  • Lyulf is heading back toward the door
  • Svend says he needs people to go out into the city, wants us to go back out into the city
  • Xan says yes, Odd will gladly go, so will Enid
  • Priority is to put out literal and figurative fires
  • Eloenn does another sweep, more than one human
  • They are heavily robed and nondescript, no insignias or icons
  • They’re trying to avoid the limelight, sticking to the shadows
  • They seem uncomfortable, afraid of the goblins
  • Not that many of them
  • A lot are gathered up around the garrison, look more uncomfortable, hiding in shadows
  • Courtyard, goblins gathered around outer edges of the courtyard, semi-circle
  • Out of arrow range
  • Angrily, Daggart says they know about Odd’s hidey holes, blocked them up
  • Gets all salty, then calms down, there’s one spot Odd used to use, that they blocked up previously, but they can open it back up. Aqueduct that exists to feed them during a siege.
  • If we’re careful, we should be able to get out that way. Not very defensible.
  • Daggart thinks he could get us out along the wall to find somewhere to repel down, but they don’t know how far the goblins have spread out, and it would be very dangerous
  • Odd walks over to Ethan
  • Svend says, step one is saving his wife Catarina
  • Daggart sneers
  • Svend wants us to get her back to him safely
  • Try to get her guard back too
  • Fennaen is totally safe, seems kinda cagey about it, our house is probably the safest place and he’s still there
  • Lyulf is worried about those who don’t have guards
  • Daggart says bring back everyone you possible can
  • Catarina was last seen in the shopping district
  • Lots of townspeople are probably stranded there
  • Lead us down to the bottom of the garrison through storage rooms. Odd’s the only one that recognizes this area
  • Crates and boxes and old supplies
  • Handful of guards moving crates aside, secret passage back there
  • Ilsevel pulls Eloenn aside, are you sure you want to do this. You’ll see things that’ll change you
  • Eloenn says she’s not just going to stand here
  • Ilsevel says to be safe, she’ll hold the entrance so we can get back in
  • Lyulf helps move boxes, not very carefully
  • Enid dodges boxes
  • Low water, very dark in the aqueduct
  • Notetaker guy shows up, with a keyring, one of these keys opens the gate on the other side
  • Know about this cause of Odd, closed the gate and locked it
  • Reactivating the mechanism to fill the tunnel takes time
  • If we’re spotted, will have to reactivate the water as soon as possible.
  • Tunnel takes a while to get through, it’s gross.
  • Get to the gate, everything is gross and grimy
  • Riley quietly finds the right key and manages to open the gate
  • As we’re exiting, we hear voices
  • Lyulf and Ethan don’t have darkvision
  • We put out the torches
  • At least two voices, speaking goblin
  • “Do you see anything?” “no, shut up” “you shut up”

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
