First Session

9/25/16

  • We find ourselves in The Customs House. It’s heading toward the late part of early evening, we’ll be leaving early the next morning. Prep for the caravan is still going on. Some of the prep people don’t expect to sleep, working throughout the night.
  • Us paying customers will sleep.
  • Drawn to the common room cause there’s a commotion, no one in there
  • Gather around windows
  • Shouting and noise, something exciting going on outside
  • Window shatters, lit torch goes onto the floor
  • Stomp it out
  • Large groups of goblins outside on the city streets, running amuck
  • They’re yelling
  • Surreal for us, goblins have never been in oldtown
  • Travel in small armies
  • Angry little guys
  • Survive by sticking together in army troupes
  • Handful could get into the city, but they don’t travel in groups that small usually
  • Army-sized group is here now, how did they make it in here?
  • Seems impossible
  • Riley is not pleased about this attack
  • They’re panicking, through this would be a lot easier
  • The buildings aren’t really catching fire, only small fires
  • Goblins are scattering
  • Shouts and screams all over the city
  • Booker, bartender, suggests that normal caravan guards can hold the bar and the surrounding around
  • Rest of us should get out there
  • He wants to keep the bar standing
  • Doesn’t know how many are out there.
  • Everyone jumps out windows, Eloenn takes the door
  • We’re a large enough group, once we get into street, the goblins scatter
  • They all run in chaotic directions
  • Morale is broken instantly
  • Favoring northwesterly direction
  • Possibly plan on regrouping in that direction
  • As we pursue them, shouts all over the city
  • Northeast, horizon is much brighter
  • Not too bad around us, smoke is rising but not too much fire
  • As we’re marching through, a group of people rushes out in front of us, turns with weapons drawn toward the thing chasing them
  • It’s goblins
  • Ilsevel shows up, she’s protecting three human children, they’re behind her
  • Metal arm is damaged, with a spear through it
  • Fighting with her other hand
  • Otherwise fine
  • Kids are scared, but fine
  • Goblins throw themselves into formation
  • Shields as tall as they are, spears
  • One in the back with a bow
  • Xan misses with fire
  • Reckonth bothers the archer, Riley shoots him with a bow, kills him
  • Eloenn creates some sparks in a goblin’s face, Harper kills him with his quarterstaff
  • Odd misses with his longsword
  • Harper tells Odd it was a good effort
  • Enid attacks, kungfu’s the goblin’s head off
  • Odd now has a fear of catgirls
  • Lyulf attacks with his greatsword, cuts the shield and the goblin in half
  • Goblins are all dead
  • Eloenn is looking a little pale, hugs her owl
  • Once the goblins are dead, Ilsevel steps forward, commends us.
  • Odd salutes
  • She seems a little surprised and disappointed that Eloenn’s here
  • Riley nods politely
  • “We need to get these children to the garrison”
  • Harper salutes cause Odd did
  • Getting people to the garrison as quickly as she can
  • Goblins are closing in on the fort
  • People are trying to fortify
  • Ilsevel conscripts us to get the kids into the garrison
  • We need to get in there too
  • Eloenn sends Reckonth up to count goblins
  • In the immediate area, four teams of goblins in the surrounding streets
  • More goblins every time I look, dozens and dozens
  • Fort is to the northwest
  • Relay this info to mom
  • Kids are young and slow
  • Ilsevel can carry one
  • They’re kinda scared of Lyulf
  • Odd doesn’t want to touch them
  • Harper and Ethan each carry one
  • They stay towards the back to keep the kids out of danger
  • Ilsevel can help guide us, suggests we avoid conflict
  • Oldtown is a horrible rat’s nest of wooden structures built on top of stone structures
  • Eloenn helps steer us away from big groups with her view through Reckonth
  • She holds onto Xan’s shirt
  • Odd leads us through back alleys
  • We try to move stealthily, but it’s rather uneffective
  • Large group, six goblin soldiers, and a human telling them what to do, pointing at buildings and at the torches
  • We’re just sneaky enough to huddle down until we pass
  • Because of Odd’s knowledge of backstreets, we avoid every other group handily

  • Soon enough, we see the garrison
  • Close to the outermost wall of Oldtown
  • Build into the wall – garrison
  • Structure reaches out of the wall, castle built into the wall
  • Large groups of goblins gathering around gate into the garrison
  • Soldiers on parapet, shooting down to keep the goblins at bay
  • With Odd’s help, we sneak past the goblins and into the garrison. They bar the doors immediately after we get inside
  • Goblins start closing in, we’re the last people to get inside
  • Ilsevel takes the kids, hands them to a guard
  • Shouts orders, points at us and leads us up to the parapets
  • Meet two people in charge, Svend, governor of Oldtown. Also dwarf boss of guards, Daggart
  • Looking out over city, trying to plan what to do
  • Ilsevel demands their attention, gives them her report
  • Odd salutes, stands at attention
  • They ask us for our information, don’t know what happened
  • Governor is stressed
  • “We don’t know how long this is going to go on, did we lose the city?”
  • Occupied, or just a raid?
  • Daggart perks up when Eloenn mentions a human
  • Light blue robes, average build, thick heavy robes
  • Little too hefty to be an elf
  • Movement made us think he’s older
  • Riley mentions that the goblins thought this would be easier
  • Human with Daggart takes notes
  • Seems like Daggart isn’t listening, just staring dead-eyed
  • When she trails off, he springs into action again, what she says makes sense
  • Lyulf checks for his wife and daughter in the garrison, they aren’t there
  • Rain season, goblins don’t understand that the wood is old and wet
  • Goblins are forcing everyone to barricade themselves in their homes
  • Haven’t been able to move anyone into the city safely, to stop the fires
  • Lyulf looks to see which wall he can jump over safely, but it’s very tall
  • Goblins are wary of the arrows, archers shooting down at them
  • Archers are running out of arrows
  • Not prepared for an army of this size
  • Whole structure is stone
  • Tall, with one gate. Built into the wall
  • Goblins don’t seem to be trying to climb
  • Lyulf is heading back toward the door
  • Svend says he needs people to go out into the city, wants us to go back out into the city
  • Xan says yes, Odd will gladly go, so will Enid
  • Priority is to put out literal and figurative fires
  • Eloenn does another sweep, more than one human
  • They are heavily robed and nondescript, no insignias or icons
  • They’re trying to avoid the limelight, sticking to the shadows
  • They seem uncomfortable, afraid of the goblins
  • Not that many of them
  • A lot are gathered up around the garrison, look more uncomfortable, hiding in shadows
  • Courtyard, goblins gathered around outer edges of the courtyard, semi-circle
  • Out of arrow range
  • Angrily, Daggart says they know about Odd’s hidey holes, blocked them up
  • Gets all salty, then calms down, there’s one spot Odd used to use, that they blocked up previously, but they can open it back up. Aqueduct that exists to feed them during a siege.
  • If we’re careful, we should be able to get out that way. Not very defensible.
  • Daggart thinks he could get us out along the wall to find somewhere to repel down, but they don’t know how far the goblins have spread out, and it would be very dangerous
  • Odd walks over to Ethan
  • Svend says, step one is saving his wife Catarina
  • Daggart sneers
  • Svend wants us to get her back to him safely
  • Try to get her guard back too
  • Fennaen is totally safe, seems kinda cagey about it, our house is probably the safest place and he’s still there
  • Lyulf is worried about those who don’t have guards
  • Daggart says bring back everyone you possible can
  • Catarina was last seen in the shopping district
  • Lots of townspeople are probably stranded there
  • Lead us down to the bottom of the garrison through storage rooms. Odd’s the only one that recognizes this area
  • Crates and boxes and old supplies
  • Handful of guards moving crates aside, secret passage back there
  • Ilsevel pulls Eloenn aside, are you sure you want to do this. You’ll see things that’ll change you
  • Eloenn says she’s not just going to stand here
  • Ilsevel says to be safe, she’ll hold the entrance so we can get back in
  • Lyulf helps move boxes, not very carefully
  • Enid dodges boxes
  • Low water, very dark in the aqueduct
  • Notetaker guy shows up, with a keyring, one of these keys opens the gate on the other side
  • Know about this cause of Odd, closed the gate and locked it
  • Reactivating the mechanism to fill the tunnel takes time
  • If we’re spotted, will have to reactivate the water as soon as possible.
  • Tunnel takes a while to get through, it’s gross.
  • Get to the gate, everything is gross and grimy
  • Riley quietly finds the right key and manages to open the gate
  • As we’re exiting, we hear voices
  • Lyulf and Ethan don’t have darkvision
  • We put out the torches
  • At least two voices, speaking goblin
  • “Do you see anything?” “no, shut up” “you shut up”
  • Harper manages to sneak up and see that there are six of them
  • Riley stealthy closes and locks the door
  • Eloenn casts sleep on the goblins, five of them fall asleep
  • Riley sneak attacks one of the archers, puts an arrow through his head, killing him
  • Harper uses his shortbow, hits goblin in the gut, he starts panicking
  • Xan uses a fire bolt, his head catches on fire and he dies
  • Odd throws a handaxe at the panicking one, killing him
  • Lyulf throws a javelin, hits the goblin’s shield, which wasn’t even up
  • Ethan uses his hand crossbow, kills the last goblin
  • Riley, Lyulf, Xan start slitting sleeping throats
  • Eloenn is horrified, Odd holds his shield in front of her eyes
  • Murder hobos have stolen all the food and trinkets
  • We’re now safely outside

  • Shopping district isn’t too far, towards the western center of the city
  • Posh part is north
  • We move quickly and quietly, Odd leads us through backstreets again.
  • We run into one group of goblins, four goblins and two humans
  • We try to sneak up, Ethan’s invisible, Eloenn trips
  • The goblins see Eloenn, everyone else surrounds them
  • Goblins throw their weapons down, humans yell at them to fight, but they refuse
  • Riley, in goblin, tells them to leave. They bob their heads and say they’ll leave, they’ll take their friends and leave
  • Point at humans, they’re the leaders
  • Humans are putting their hands up, not us!
  • Lyulf and Enid start threatening them
  • The humans refuse to talk, looking at each other, goblins are yelling.
  • Lyulf takes a step toward the humans, one of the humans sticks a dagger in the other human’s eye, and then slits his own throat
  • Stabbed human has nothing on him, just the robe
  • One who did the killing, priest uniform, necklace, symbol of Ishkur in his pocket
  • Riley takes it
  • Individual goblin is not brave, but perfect soldier when in a squad
  • Goblins are running down the street
  • Xan and Riley attack with fire bolt and longbow, kill two of them
  • Harper and Ethan refuse
  • Lyulf throws a javelin, kills one
  • Last one left runs away screaming, darts into an alley
  • We get to the shopping district, it’s pretty empty. Most were closed when this started
  • Only a few were open, by request
  • Come to an apothecary, dead goblins in front of it.
  • Windows are dark, door is barred.
  • Riley bangs on the door, we’re from the city guard
  • Voice inside asking who we are
  • Riley says who she is, who sent us, mayor and dwarf
  • Muffled arguing inside, door unlocks and opens. Four or five guards in full armor inside. Woman in fine clothing, shopkeeper, two or three other humans.
  • Eloenn greets her
  • Riley asks if they tried to find survivors, yes, the other people here were from other shops
  • Harper and Riley think other people probably need our help.
  • Guards’ first concern is keeping Catarina safe
  • Lyulf thinks the guards are humans
  • The guards have seen some humans
  • Guards think they’ll be safe, but Catarina says the guards should go save more people
  • This is the most she’s spoken ever in our presence, very firm.
  • Riley respects her more
  • Catarina assumes Svend sent us, argues that he’s not thinking clearly about what the city needs, because she’s not there. I don’t care about myself, I’m safe here. He won’t focus until I get back.
  • Enid looks around outside for other people, street is empty, shops are silent. Nothing is on fire here.
  • Harper tugs on Odd’s arm and whisper that they’re doing no good by being here
  • Still some screams in the distance
  • Lyulf starts going door to door, seeing if anyone is hiding, finds no one.
  • Eloenn sees no one visible from the sky. Goblins aren’t bothering people who aren’t in the street, heading toward the garrison. Looting the lower part of the market
  • Upper part on a hill, bazaar is below the hill
  • Taking supplies they’re looting in central locations, moving the supplies into manholes, sewer grates.
  • No humans out in the open, if ones are holed up in houses, goblins may be outside, but they aren’t trying to get inside
  • Goblins that aren’t actively looting are heading toward the garrison.
  • Odd looks anxiously in the direction of the posh side of town, but will agree the slummier parts of the city probably need more help.
  • Goblins not trying to loot or burn the posh part of town
  • Fires in the poor parts, not a lot of damage though
  • Catarina says she can get back safely, she’ll leave the aqueduct open
  • Try to get a human alive
  • Reckonth finds a human leading a group of goblins to the garrison
  • Catarina says the humans seem to be ringleader, but the goblin commanders mainly lead them
  • Capturing a commander is also good
  • Harper grabs ethan’s hand and states that there’s people in the slums who need help. they’re wasting time doing nothing
  • Ethan holds his hand tighter and looks at him thankfully
  • These guards are the best of the best
  • Riley will go back with the guards and Catarina, signal Reckonth when she’s locked the aqueduct behind them
  • Everyone else wants to head to the slums

  • Slums are toward the east or south
  • Could go around bazaar or through it, Odd knows the backstreets better
  • Go longway around the bazaar, takes longer, get around it without issue
  • Aren’t roving bands of goblins here
  • We’re aware there are people around, but they’re avoiding us
  • People are running away, hear noises but don’t see anyone
  • As we get closer to the slums, see goblins standing guard at street corners, not actively trying to get into any houses or attacking anyone. Just guarding
  • Some places, goblins are standing in front of larger houses, just watching the door. We think people are inside, but no one’s coming out
  • Lyulf wants to take out the guards
  • One goblin seems to be the ringleader
  • In front of a large tavern, sometimes goblins throw rocks at windows, leader tells him to knock it off.
  • The goblins are bored, don’t like standing around
  • Discipline is slipping
  • We sneak up on the group, everyone except Lyulf, who’ll rush in after

  • Eloenn asks if anyone has rope, Odd has manacles
  • His first arrest!
  • Leader is terrified of Enid, he shuts up
  • Faces in the windows of the tavern, kinda drunk.
  • The drunks say, the goblins got here, threw some rocks, killed one guy, and then just hung out
  • Eloenn badgers the drunks into locking the bar door
  • No one listens to Eloenn _
  • The goblins are just trying to keep people holed up
  • Head to find Ethan’s siblings, find them in their hovel, hiding. No goblins bothered them.

  • Riley has manages to get Catarina and her entourage back without issue. Catarina will try to get things organized in there
  • Riley asks for more orders, Catarina doesn’t know the situation is yet
  • Riley heads inside the garrison with her. People rush Riley and Catarina up to the top. Svend, Daggart, and another man is there. Svend is overjoyed, but Catarina ignores him, asks what’s going on.
  • Strange man says everything’s under control, trying to figure out what they can. Catarina calms down.
  • Daggart asks any new information. Riley produces the amulet, everyone looks at the new guy
  • His eyes go wide and he gets pale.
  • He is Gregori, high priest of Ishkur in the city. Wants to know about the man who had the amulet. Riley tells everyone everything he knows.
  • Gregori shakes his head and goes to sit down.
  • Doesn’t know who would do this
  • Ishkur is god of storms and wisdom
  • Gregori says the person she’s describing sounds like a person from his priesthood, but he’s not sure who exactly
  • Only became high priest in the last year
  • Moved up the ranks quickly, doesn’t know everyone yet
  • He seems sincere in his surprise, and a little angry. Frustrated. Doesn’t have answers that he wants.
  • Riley tells them that the rest of the group is out trying to protect people, trying to capture a leader
  • Riley sends Reckonth back, Eloenn lets her know we have a goblin prisoner

  • Head back in the general direction of the garrison with the prisoner, stop by Lyulf’s house.
  • Lyulf goes to his neighbor’s cellar. His wife and daughter are there, with about 10 people from around the area.
  • Also want to look for Xan’s family.
  • Garrison is about an hour away
  • We take the civilians with us.
  • Head back around the bazaar, but closer to the bazaar than the last time.
  • Eloenn and Enid stay with the civilians
  • Xan, Harper, and Ethan go to check on Xan’s mom
  • Odd stays with civilians
  • Harper, Xan, and Ethan sneak past the goblins easily.
  • Goblins are pulling wagons, moving looted supplies, leader goblins are yelling at them
  • Xan gets to the bakery, looks in the window. A few neighbors are there as well, everyone looks safe, huddled in the corner.
  • No goblins have tried breaking in
  • The teams rejoins the main group and we head to the garrison
  • Eloenn sends a note saying we’re close

  • Lyulf’s off seeing to the status of things in the garrison
  • Harper is helping the wounded
  • Odd follows Riley and Eloenn.
  • Eloenn sees that the goblins have quarantined off the garrison, mainly goblins, handful of humans but they’re hiding in buildings.
  • Non-goblin soldiers with the goblins, but apart, not looting. Standing guard, around the humans. Humans, feral elves, a handful of orcs.
  • Dead goblins in front of Riley’s bar, but the mercenary company has held down the neighborhood and everyone’s safe.
  • Eloenn says all this. Svend is troubled.
  • Prisoner goblin is chained up, kicking his feet.
  • Ilsevel is busy organizing the guards into squads, planning a counterattack.
  • Riley speaks goblin, volunteers to translate.
  • Daggart points at the goblin, what’s going on here.
  • Riley asks who the leaders are, objectives, etc.
  • Goblin says, we’re getting what’s ours, what we deserve. This is for goblins. Some humans told us to do it. Can’t give a good description, can’t tell humans apart.
  • Black and grey hair.
  • One guy telling lots of other guys, other guys telling us what to do.
  • Grey-haired guy the sylvans wouldn’t stop the goblins from going through the greenwall, they can take what we want.
  • All of Greenwall let us through
  • Very insane, centaurs hate goblins
  • Goblin doesn’t know how this happened
  • Sometimes they went through the jungle, sometimes underground, humans knew how to get through, never saw anyone in the Greenwall
  • This has been happening over the last couple days
  • How many? Goblin smiles evilly, all goblins are here

  • Daggart wants to know where the leaders are, how many, where are they taking the supplies. Goblin doesn’t know any of these things.
  • As we’re interrogating the goblin, the door burst open, Daggart’s second-in-command comes in, the walls have been breached, goblins are inside the garrison.
